About the Position
The Western Washington University Head Men’s Rowing Coach is responsible for leading all training and practice aspects of the Men’s Rowing Club within Campus Recreation.
This includes teaching and coaching student athletes for successful competition; mentoring and engaging student-athletes’ for academic success and personal success;
assisting with schedule management; supporting fundraising efforts; and developing positive alumni and parent relations.
Position Duties and Responsibilities :
70% - Teaching and Coaching :
- Lead the technique and skill development of the students.
- Direct practices and training on the water and on land.
- Design training programs for both in season training and off season training.
- Enforce all club sports and boathouse protocols for participation and safety.
- Plan and direct team travel and competition.
- Maintain equipment
- Perform other duties as directed as the program continues to evolve.
20% - Program Management :
- Assist student leadership in the development of clear and appropriate team protocols and standards in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation
- Ensure established team protocols and standards are met and maintained and deal effectively with any breach or conflict as per the University’s policies and procedures
- Comply with institutional and departmental policies
- Be knowledgeable of and comply with all conference rules and regulations.
- Supervise volunteer assistant coaching staff
- Work collaboratively with department staff
- Maintain appropriate coach-athlete relationships
10% - Other Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, therefore welcoming and supporting all faculty, staff and students and expanding access to the WWU experience
- Maintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies
- Participate in all required assigned training, including safety training and will comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols
- Effective written and oral communication skills required
This is a permanent, half-time, 9-month position.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- College or competitive rowing experience (as an athlete and / or coach) and knowledge of club sports programs.
- CPR / First Aid certification required and may be obtained on the job.
- Experience driving a coaching launch.
- Valid Washington Boater Education card or ability to get one before starting.
- Valid Driver’s License (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 5yrs).
- US Rowing level 2 coaching certification.
- Capability driving a truck towing a boat trailer
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field
- Previous coaching experience at the collegiate level
- Excellent organizational, planning, supervisory and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability and willingness to travel with the team.
- Ability to be a positive role model to athletes.
- Ability to do minor repairs and maintenance on rowing equipment and boathouse.
- Ability to work outdoors in a multitude of weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 40 lbs. or more
