Purpose and Scope

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Technician will perform duties to proactively maintain and repair equipment in order to ensure equipment reliability thereby reducing downtime and improving manufacturing efficiency.

This individual will perform all tasks in accordance with company policies and procedures including those related to quality, safety and the environment.

The maintenance technician may also be involved with identified operational improvement initiatives and capital projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out safely and securely; for both employees and contractors and in line with company policies and procedures (SOPs), and OSHA safety standards and requirements e.g. LOTO and others.
  • Be proactive, with regard to maintaining site machinery and facilities recommending on-going improvements for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure correct and safe operation of equipment and machinery and advise management of any safety issues that need action and ensure that anything requiring urgent action is dealt with immediately.
  • Schedule and perform preventive maintenance inspections, service on machines and work orders.
  • Respond to equipment faults / breakdowns as they occur including diagnosis / fault finding and carry out repairs to all types of plant and equipment in a safe, timely and professional manner.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain motors, gearboxes, conveyors, electrical systems, PLC, pneumatic tools and hydraulic equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and install AC and DC equipment & controllers, solenoids, relays, motors, and control centers.
  • Involved in the installation and commission of new equipment and machinery.
  • Assist and co-ordinate with visiting specialist engineers when necessary.
  • Make full use of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Plan / prioritize workload to support production and ensure efficient use of working time.
  • Undertake designated fabrication / engineering projects as assigned by the Engineering Supervisor or VP Operations.
  • Source replacement parts and perform repairs.
  • Using power tools and different hand tools to complete assigned maintenance tasks.
  • Safely operate forklift, cranes, power tools, hoists, and hand tools.
  • Maintain parts and tools inventory.
  • Prepare maintenance reports and summary presentations using daily activity logs, analysis and trends.
  • Maintain electrical, electronic, pneumatics, hydraulics and mechanical knowledge via on-going training, industry workshops and technical reading.

  • Knowledge of health and safety and environmental regulations.
  • Requires a broad knowledge and competence of maintenance skills including mechanical repair, plumbing, welding, carpentry, fabrication, and a basic knowledge of electrical repair.
  • Requires an advanced understanding of mechanics, electrical, welding and pipe fitting.
  • Requires a basic understanding of PLC systems hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • Requires the ability to use blueprints & schematics for repairs and interpretation of rough sketches and drawings.
  • Ability to use and operate diverse types of maintenance tools and test equipment such as hand tools, power tools, welders, cutting torches, plasma cutter, pipe threaders, Voltage meters and Megohmmeters.
  • Team player and willing and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other departments.
  • Language Skills An individual must be able to effectively resolve maintenance problems by often discussing matters with management, quality control and maintenance personnel.

Good written and oral communications skills are essential.

Mathematical and Reasoning Ability - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of specifications and information furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Education and / or Experience

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Advanced technical or college training preferred.
  • 5+ years in a industrial maintenance or heavy equipment experience required.
  • Plastics or Rubber Compounding experience and experience with plastic extruder and mixing equipment is desirable.
  • Ability to operate a forklift (sit down preferred) and aerial platform lift.
  • Microsoft Office literacy is required, especially Excel, Word, Access and Outlook.

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires walking, sitting and standing.
  • Ability to lift 60lbs. frequently, including the ability to climb and descend stairs / ladders.
  • The position requires stooping, crouching, kneeling and bending.
  • Awareness of environment; manufacturing, warehouse and areas with temperature swings, noise hazards, moving parts, electricity and forklift traffic.
  • Ability to utilize PPE including hearing protection, eye protection, safety shoes and occasionally a respirator and protective clothing.
  • Ability to understand and follow all Company Safety, Environmental and Quality Policies and Procedures.
  • This role may be subject to internal and external environmental conditions.
  • Working in manufacturing and office environments.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places;

fumes or airborne particles; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment
