Minimum Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of senior leadership experience in policing.

Position Summary

The Deputy Chief of Police is responsible for an array of oversight, under the general direction from the Chief of Police or his designee.

This position will collaborate with the University of Georgia Police Department's Command Staff on making recommendations and decisions regarding the department's budget, organizational structure, and policy decisions.

This position will also work to provide updates on crime trends, major incidents, campus emergencies, and police / safety data.

This position could serve in a variety of different roles including Police Operations, Engagement, Training, and Standards, or Special Events and Administration.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and / or Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of modern police methods, practices and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and university regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices of police administration.
  • Considerable knowledge of the functions and objectives of other state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies.
  • Ability to analyze complex police problems.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of subordinates and to advise, instruct, and train personnel.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver effective presentations to groups comprised campus and off-campus participants.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse communities.
  • High degree of self-motivation and organization.
  • Ability to work on multiple initiatives and plans simultaneously.
  • Ability to exercise command under the most difficult of conditions, based upon recognition by subordinates of the technical competence, character, and emotional suitability of the superior.
  • Ability to deal with the public firmly and courteously under stress conditions and to establish effective working relationships with the public, news media, and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Skill in the use and care of firearms and firm administration of firearms safety policies.

Engagement, Training, and Standards :

  • Develop, plan, and implement various programs and initiatives related to outreach by the University of Georgia Police Department.
  • Coordinate with various campus units and groups to identify opportunities for outreach by the University of Georgia Police Department.
  • Coordinate with various internal divisions and units of the University of Georgia Police Department to ensure that outreach initiatives are beneficial for their specific needs.
  • Coordinate efforts to create, support, and sustain programs focused on equity in criminal justice practices.
  • Act as a liaison between the University of Georgia Police Department and various on and off-campus offices and groups with matters related to outreach and community service.
  • Act as departmental representative on committees and work groups related to outreach.
  • Maintain and utilize data related to behavioral health related incidents and alcohol and other drug use to design outreach initiatives geared specifically towards meeting the needs of those affected.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of the crime prevention and support services units.

Police Operations :

  • Planning, assigning, and supervising the activities of the patrol unit.
  • Coordinating the activities of the patrol and CID operations.
  • Develops and implements staffing plans; studies crime and other reports to determine trends, and implements changes in organization and operating procedures to obtain the most effective results.
  • Supervises subordinates and highly complex criminal and other investigations.
  • Exercises independent judgment in all matters pertaining to the day to day operations including the application of laws and ordinances.
  • Attends campus events to represent UGPD .

Special Events & Administration :

  • Exercises independent judgment in all matters pertaining to the day to day operations including the application of laws and ordinances.
  • Manages campus security camera systems and UGPD IT department.
  • Prepares or directs the preparation and maintenance of necessary records and reports.
  • Oversees special event operations including Football and other major sporting events.
  • Oversees and manages overtime pertaining to major campus events.
  • Supervises and coordinates activities involving UGPD's communications division and oversees policy and state certification.

Other Duties as Required :

  • Attends campus meetings to serve as a liaison between UGPD and the UGA Campus and other outside agencies.
  • Stays up to date on current police trends and trainings pertaining to police work.
  • Completes recertification each year to maintain sworn personnel status.
  • Assumes full responsibility for the activities of the department during the absence of the Chief of Police.
