We are seeking a dedicated professional to perform a variety of essential functions in the field of cytogenetics.
Duties
As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for :
- Performing sample set up, harvesting, slide preparation and staining, microscopic analysis, photography, karyotyping, and FISH analysis.
- Assuring the integrity of specimens during all phases of specimen processing.
- Conducting various culturing procedures including establishing blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures; monitoring growth levels;
making decisions regarding feeding, subculturing, and harvesting.
- Executing various slide preparations and staining techniques such as standard Giemsa, Q-, R-, C- banding, and NOR staining.
- Performing detailed microscopic analysis and ruling out chromosomal mosaicism; making decisions regarding optimal cells for documentation and operating automated karyotyping equipment.
- Performing FISH processing and analysis.
- Managing record keeping, maintaining stock supply levels, orienting new personnel in the lab, instituting new procedures, and participating in continuing education programs.
- Applying cryogenic technology in specimen storage as needed.
- Coordinating specific functions with laboratory personnel according to job descriptions.
- Managing quality control of culture apparatus, including monitoring CO2 levels in incubators, CO2 supply, periodic disinfection of incubators, maintenance of hoods, and monitoring liquid N2 levels.
- Staying knowledgeable about research and development within the cytogenetics field.
- Performing validation studies for new test development and participating in the compilation of validation data.
- Reporting any problems that might adversely affect patient care to supervisory personnel.
- Utilizing effective LIS and equipment data management skills.
Skills
The role requires :
- Long periods of sitting during analytical procedures and long periods of standing during harvest procedures.

- Responsibility to work in a safe manner.
