Position Overview :

The Medical Assistant is responsible for supporting and maintaining the clinical practice by upholding established policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement, and safety.

Assists physicians, nurses and other clinical staff members by performing administrative and clinical duties.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities :

The Medical Assistant has the responsibility to carry out duties as directed by My Houston Surgeons.

2. Communicates on a regular basis with the designated My Houston Surgeons Supervisor(s).

3. Follows and always maintains patient confidentiality appropriate with HIPAA compliance standards .

4. Consults and coordinates with health care team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans utilizing research, clinical experience and client history.

5. Performs medical history review, medication reconciliation, obtains vital signs, takes patient photos, and other patient care duties as needed.

6. Assists with coordination of any outside resources, testing, counseling, referrals, etc. for complete patient care.

7. Assist physicians during in-office procedures as needed.

8. Alerts Supervisor and seeks assistance when an activity or process change within the clinic changes or deviates from the current process.

9. Attends training sessions as needed to increase knowledge base and skill level.

10. Maintains accurate, detailed patient records by ensuring clinic notes are current and diagnosis codes are correct.

11. Ensures that all prior authorization and refill medication requests are addressed in a timely manner.

12. Assists in cleaning / turning over the office operating room after surgical cases.

13. Ensures that all instruments utilized in clinic are appropriately cleaned, sterilized, and available for use.

14. Performs functions of Computed Tomography (CT) scanning to include machine set up and patient positioning.

15. Ensures treatment rooms are stocked, cleaned / turned over, and ready for patient utilization each day and during clinic.

16. Ensures proper preparation and closure of clinic each day as outlined in Medical Assistant Duties document.

17. Ensures that there are an adequate supply of ice packs in the nurses station freezer.

18. Notifies appropriate supervisors upon need for clinic supply replenishing.

19. Ensures daily CT scanner calibration as assigned by Clinical Supervisor.

20. Performs clinic duties including but not limited to blood draws, suture removals, dressing changes, drain removals, and wound care.

21. Properly disposes of contaminated supplies.

22. Ensures the breast augmentation rolling cabinet is neat, organized, and garments are cleaned as assigned by Clinical Manager.

23. Prepares red surgery folders for the upcoming week.

24. Participates in annual competency training sessions as designated by My Houston Surgeons supervisor(s).

25. Other duties as assigned by My Houston Surgeons supervisors and physicians.

Secondary Job Duties & Responsibilities :

1. Manages all roles / responsibilities within the practice.

a. Manages clinic to include rooming of patients; setting up room; assisting with procedures; calling in / writing order for prescriptions, occupational or physical therapy;

removal of dressings; takes physician specific pre and post-operative photos; and ensuring appropriate patient flow.

b. Ensures all billing codes are entered.

c. Ensures consent and supply preparedness for upcoming clinic days.

d. Ensures information about injectables / therapies / in -office procedures that patients receive are communicated to the checkout team and Patient Care Coordinators by the end of the day.

2. Serves as float person in other physician clinics as assigned by Clinical Manager.

3. Administrative tasks to include filing, scanning, shredding, faxing, copying, mailing, data entry, etc as needed.

Education / Qualifications / Experience :

Any combination of education and experience that would demonstrate a high level of proficiency and advanced understanding of healthcare operations.

  • Associate Degree
  • 1-2 years of related experience preferred
  • CPR and First Aid certification required
  • Certified as Medical Assistant preferred
