About the Department : The IR-4 Project is a national Federal / State partnership research program to assist farmers of fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs, ornamentals, and other specialty crops by facilitating registration of safe and effective chemical and bio-based pest management products.
The IR-4 Project Environmental Horticulture Program (EHP) Manager position will coordinate research and pesticide registration activities on non-food, ornamental plant species.
Responsibilities include :
- Establishing research priorities via a biennial stakeholder priority-setting workshop.
- Overseeing the annual research program, developing research protocols, and assisting research cooperators.
- Interfacing with registrants, trade associations, and regulatory agencies.
- Reviewing field trial results and assessing data adequacy for regulatory actions.
Key Duties :
Environmental Horticulture Registration Support Research (40%) :
- Developing a robust field research program for pesticide registration.
- Drafting and finalizing research protocols.
- Assisting researchers and maintaining real-time project status.
- Reviewing and assessing data reports for compliance.
- Writing trial synopses and maintaining the EHP database.
Research Priority Setting (15%) :
- Managing the priority-setting process and establishing research priorities.
- Coordinating the IR-4 Environmental Horticulture Priority Setting Workshop.
Pesticide Company Interactions (15%) :
- Meeting with crop protection industry representatives to involve products in research.
- Tracking company submission targets and soliciting additional funding.
- Representing IR-4 at various meetings and conferences.
Continued Enhancement of Electronic and Data Systems (10%) :
- Cooperating with the IR-4 Technology Team to design efficient processes.
- Developing a user-centric database for stakeholder access to research.
Other Responsibilities (10%) :
- Coordinating activities with other IR-4 Project platforms.
- Providing accurate accountability information for grants and reports.
- Willing to travel for IR-4 meetings and other responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, weed science, or related area with 5 years of relevant experience; or a Master of Science with 8+ years of equivalent experience.
- All degrees must be from accredited institutions.
Other Required Qualifications :
- Attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and ability to work in teams.
- Commitment to customer service and ability to multi-task.
Preferred Qualifications :
Three years of experience with Ornamental Horticulture crops.
Required License :
Valid NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 60 days of start.
