The Tejas Energy Center is a 247 MW simple-cycle gas-fired electric generating facility. It features three Simple Cycle LM6000 PC units totaling approximately 126 MW.

Additionally, it has a Siemens 501 D5 gas turbine with a total capacity of 121 MW, equipped with automatic generation control (AGC), evaporative cooling, dry low NOx burners, and a selective catalytic reduction unit.

Utilizing the Allen-Bradley PLC series of controllers, the plant plays a critical role in supporting peak energy demands within the Houston Zone of ERCOT.

Opportunity Summary

The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician maintains continuous monitoring of all plant systems, promptly responding to alarms by taking necessary corrective actions.

Additionally, they execute plant shutdown and start-up procedures as required, ensuring the plant meets its generating requirements while prioritizing safety and efficiency.

Moreover, the O&M Technician is responsible for maintaining and repairing all instruments, control systems, and mechanical / electrical equipment within the facility.

This role requires a high level of skill in tasks such as inspection, repair, testing, adjustment, installation, and removal of all power plant equipment and systems.

Here's a look at some of the work you'll be doing in this position :

  • Operate turbine generators and auxiliaries, including start-up and shutdown. Observe and record readings of required indicators and / or instruments for safe operation within prescribed limits.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all major equipment and systems, including emergency backup systems.
  • Maintain complete equipment files, logs, and drawings for all designated equipment.
  • Forecast, inventory, and reorder spare parts to ensure plant reliability. Assist in physical inventories.
  • Participate in the administrative maintenance of plant operating manuals, technical references, prints, diagrams, and preventive / predictive maintenance records.
  • Inspect, repair, install, and remove all types of motors, generators, transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, electrical signal and communication systems, and storage batteries.

Work with electrical systems up to 480 volts.

  • Conduct troubleshooting and analysis on turbine control systems.
  • Safely operate necessary plant equipment, such as vehicles, cranes, hoists, welding and cutting equipment. Use appropriate safety equipment and techniques in the daily performance of all work activities.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints, wiring, and schematic diagrams. Perform both internal and external switching and tagging for mechanical and electrical systems under the supervision of a lead.
  • Update station logs, including maintenance repairs and outage logs, time reports, material requisitions, etc., in accordance with plant protocols.

Complete appropriate plant documents for requisitioning necessary plant parts, such as purchase order requests and work orders.

Complete other tasks as requested by the Plant Manager.

Working Relationships

The O&M Technician reports to the Plant Manager and coordinates will all other plant personnel.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.

Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position entails a 40-hour work week rotating schedule. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions.

On call" status will rotate weekends, and may periodically be required throughout the week.

Compensation

The initial starting compensation will range from $50 to $55 per hour.

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment, typically acquired through four years of high school.
  • Two or more years of work experience as a technician in a related industry is desirable.
  • Experience with operating and maintaining GE LM6000 gas turbines (GE Level 1 or equivalent trained), including troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and adherence to safety and environmental standards in a power plant setting, is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in operating turbine generators and auxiliary equipment, including start-up and shutdown procedures.
  • Previous mechanical or electrical experience is desired, with proficiency in performing preventive maintenance on major equipment and systems, including emergency backup systems.
  • Extensive experience in inspecting, repairing, installing, and removing various electrical components, including motors, generators, transformers, switches, and control equipment.
  • Ability to work well with others and be self-directed, as well as apply creative solutions to unique maintenance problems as they occur, is desirable.
  • Must be able to work from blueprints and be skilled in the use of hand and power-driven tools.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent organizational skills.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times.
