Position Summary : Faculty members are expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following areas throughout their employment at the college.

Lab Instructors teach requisite firefighting skills to prepare students for third party state firefighter certification pertaining to four core curriculums (Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, Fire I, Fire II).

Lab Instructors work with, teach, and maintain fire equipment (chain saws, ladders, breathing apparatus, personal protective gear, extrication equipment) to ensure students receive quality and emergency services operations and delivery.

Ability to interpret and evaluate theories in the field or discipline and connect subject matter with related fields. Plan and organize instruction in ways which maximize student learning.

Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies. Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs.

Create and / or modify course revisions appropriate to current Fire and Emergency Services principles and delivery methods.

Employ available instructional technology when appropriate. Serve as proctor on the Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT).

Required Qualifications :

  • Strong communication skills (writing, speaking, and non-verbal)
  • Strong knowledge in Firefighting, EMS, and Hazmat
  • Ability to perform confidently and competently in dynamic, highly stressful situations
  • Ability to maintain the safety and security of students
  • Knowledge of firefighting equipment and personal protective equipment
  • Ability to operate heavy emergency equipment
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions based on perceptive and analytical processes
  • Strong collaboration and customer service skills
  • Ability to maintain high level of professionalism, initiative, resourcefulness, and personal accountability
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Commitment to accuracy with keen attention to detail
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • IFSAC / PRO BOARD Certifications : FFI / FFII / HAZMAT OPS
  • Ability to teach in the following areas :
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations
  • Firefighter I & II
  • This position requires at least five (5) experience as a firefighter in a fire department.
  • Have subject matter knowledge of modern fire and emergency services delivery models and

operations.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Fire Instructor I
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree
  • Previous experience teaching firefighting skills to entry level students with no previous knowledge of firefighting.

Position Details : Job duties include but are not limited to :

  • Perform daily skills training in accordance with state job performance regulations (JPRs) as determined by third-party certification testing.
  • Oversee live fire preceptors for assigned students during state certification required training. Responsible for the team during all scenarios (basement fire, bedroom fire, kitchen fire, ventilation, RIT Team).

Preceptors teach proper fire ground behavior, equipment use, and decontamination.

  • Proctor the National Candidate Physical Ability Test, which is a preemployment agility certification.
  • Set up stations for state certification, approximately 30 testable items that 48 students are assessed on over two days.

Review and collect 48 sets of protective gear (coats, pants, gloves, boots, nomex hoods, helmets, and breathing apparatus) from the students.

Dismantle linings of coats and pants and process for laundering. Return and hang laundered items.

  • Ensure students can perform skills competently prior to checking off skill sheets.
  • Administer course evaluations and surveys for student completion.
  • Maintain optimal working order and inventory of all fire-related training equipment.
  • Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity, may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Scheduling, shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.
