Job Summary
The Phlebotomy Lead, under general supervision, guides the Phlebotomy staff assuring specimen collections are performed in compliance with federal, state, and regulatory agency standards.
The Phlebotomy Lead uses computer systems and devices to collect and deliver laboratory specimens in a timely manner that are utilized in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of physical conditions.
Ensure patient testing requirements are met and promote quality in patient contacts and communication for patient and family safety.
The phlebotomy oversees the day to day operations in the absence of the Phlebotomy Supervisor.
Essential Functions :
Staff Management
Oversee phlebotomy staff team in performing human venipuncture, the collection of blood specimens, and the performance of safety and compliance standards.
Assist Phlebotomy Supervisor in setting clear expectations for behaviors, testing compliance and productivity through communications, mentoring and setting of developmental goals and managing performance.
- Provide on-call assistance to the Phlebotomy Supervisor and the department for all problem-solving and staffing needs. Sets clear expectations for staff by developing job specific customer service expectations and behaviors for each position supervised;
- clearly communicates expectations to each employee and establishes the expectations as job requirements and performance appraisal components;
delegates responsibility / authority whenever possible. (30%)
Collection
Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods; from capillaries by dermal puncture, such as heel or finger stick methods and from arteries, using arterial collection techniques. (30%)
Training
Assist Phlebotomy Supervisor with phlebotomy teaching of phlebotomy staff, nurses, students, etc. Provides one-on-one training, to ensure competency is demonstrated.
Participates in and assists in documenting required competency testing for staff, meeting timeline requirements. (20%)
Policy and Practice
Assist Phlebotomy Supervisor in writing and updating policies and procedures. (10%)
Laboratory Testing
Conduct standards tests, such as blood alcohol, blood culture, oral glucose tolerance, glucose screening, blood smears, or peak and trough drug levels tests.
Transport specimens or fluid samples from collection sites to laboratories, documenting the route of specimens from collection to laboratory analysis and diagnosis.
Provide sample analysis results to physicians to assist diagnosis. (10%)
Education :
Certificate / Program Phlebotomy OR Certificate / Program Medical Assistant Required
Work Experience :
4-6 years' experience performing phlebotomy services Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Ability to lead, motivate and coach employees in addition to acting as a team player in the Lab Operations Team. Ability to handle all patient, visitor, and hospital staff concerns in a professional manner in compliance with the Mission and Values of Denver Health.
Ability to measure competency requirements for staff performing phlebotomy.
- Excellent communication, time management, teaching, and organizational skills.
- Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Knowledge of patient rights and laws relative to those rights, such as HIPAA
- Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety and infection control practices to ensure a safe environment of care
- Skills necessary to successfully perform phlebotomy in a variety of age groups.
- Ability to handle patient specimens and laboratory equipment.
- Familiar with regulatory compliance in quality control and competency requirements.
- Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented work in identifying, accessioning, and handling specimens for processing and testing.
