Overview :

The Associate Dean (AD) for Diversity and Inclusion is responsible for working with ODI staff to develop curricula and implement training modules / models that enhance students’ learning and build their capacity to engage in thoughtful dialogue around issues of diversity, inclusion, belonging, well-being, and identity.

The Associate Dean organizes, designs, delivers, and evaluates student workshops, trainings, and experiential courses (e.

g., Intergroup Dialogue) on topics including identity, social concepts / constructs, inclusion, belonging, and engagement across difference.

The Associate Dean serves as the ODI lead and organizer for the Dialogue and Difference in Action (DDA) pre-orientation program.

This position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Diversity, Belonging, and Well-Being (Campus Life). The AD has the opportunity to build collaborative partnerships and make a broad impact across the University community.

Responsibilities :

Develops and facilitates structured diversity and inclusion workshops / trainings.

Serves as a resource to and assists with training efforts of organized groups including, but not limited to : peer leaders, orientation leaders, student organizations, student employees, and RCAs, etc.

Accommodates ad-hoc workshop / training requests from student organizations / departments.

Organizes and structures ODI workshop / training offerings for student communities.

Consults with D&I professionals (e.g., Campus Life, ODOC, Provost's Office, Graduate School, etc.) and faculty / staff on student training efforts.

Works in collaboration with colleagues to develop and facilitate student community-building processes that may incorporate methods such as restorative justice, intergroup dialogue and narrative practices, etc.

Work with ODI staff to build progressive curricula and content and create specialized identity-based, concept-based, and skill-building trainings (i.

e., systems of oppression, power / privilege, intersectionality, implicit bias, social identities, allyship, etc.) for undergraduate and graduate students.

Serves as the coordinator for the first-year experience diversity orientation program, Dialogue and Difference in Action (DDA).

Serves as the ODI coordinator of the diversity & inclusion program for new student orientation, in collaboration with ODUS.

Regularly assesses diversity, inclusion, well-being and belonging student learning outcomes and evaluates training efforts.

Develops reports and recommendations based on findings.

Assists AVP for Diversity, Belonging & Well-Being with assessing / mapping efforts that utilize the Framework on Diversity and Inclusion and developing new & emerging ODI frameworks and tools.

Helps to articulate Campus Life's collective impact on student learning as it relates to diversity, inclusion, belonging, and well-being.

Represents the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life / ODI on University Committees; Undertakes special projects and performs other duties as assigned / needed.

Qualifications

Essential :

Master’s or professional degree and 5+ years of relevant experience.

Fluency with the prevailing and emerging trends in higher education and knowledge and application of evidence-based practices and theoretical models in diversity and inclusion programming and training.

Experience building progressive curricula and content and creating specialized identity-based, concept-based, and skill-building trainings

Demonstrated experience effectively working and establishing rapport with diverse populations with strong working knowledge of social justice theories and scholarship.

Demonstrated ability and strong interpersonal skills to work with individuals and groups with a wide array of backgrounds, identities, life experiences and communication styles.

High level of proficiency with computers and the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Outlook mail and calendars, and Excel

Demonstrated ability to take initiative, problem solve and work independently with good judgment about when to seek direction

Excellent project management, problem-solving and organizational skills and ability to quickly learn new tasks

Ability to customize training, read one’s audience, and adapt creatively to the needs of a diverse group of students, staff, and faculty

Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to interact effectively with students, faculty, and other administrators

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and high emotional intelligence.

Very strong copy-editing and proofreading ability

Ability to recognize and protect sensitive and confidential information and exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy in handling sensitive information and situations

Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends.

Preferred :

Knowledge of Photoshop, Acrobat, PowerPoint, Teams, Slack, and Canva

Experience in an academic environment, working closely with college / university students, staff, and faculty

Knowledge of financial operating systems (e.g., Prime, Concur, etc.)

Educational background in college student personnel, higher education administration, communications, social work, counseling, sexuality and gender studies, or another related field

Experience supervising students and / or professional staff
