Job Summary
The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a student worker as a Lab Assistant in the Water Lab on the Dahlonega campus.
The Water Lab Assistant will work with other team members to : complete up to two field sampling trips per month, complete accurate water chemistry testing in the lab, and contribute to a thirty year study of water quality parameters in the Upper Chattahoochee Water Basin.
This position plays a critical role in obtaining and understanding the water quality data of the tributaries and spillways of Lake Sydney Lanier.
Responsibilities
- Performing bi-monthly field sampling acquisition trips
- Acquiring and recording accurate data in the lab and field
- Performing water chemistry and biological tests
- Critical thinking of data analysis
- General lab duties of cleaning, stocking, chemical handling and safety implementation
Knowledfe, Skills, & Abilities
- Research Lab Assistants need an understanding of water quality field and laboratory procedures, including following protocols, lab safety, and dress code.
- Field days will consist of traveling around the Upper Chattahoochee Water Basin to collect water samples in order to evaluate the quality.
- The traveling environment is with a university certified vehicle and another Lab member.
- The sampling environments are safe and may require walking and hiking to reach the desired site.
Required Qualifications
- Must be enrolled at the University of North Georgia in a minimum of six (6) credit hours to qualify as a student worker.
- One semester of college chemistry experience is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced lab skills such as computing normality, titrations, use of analytical balance, and acid exposure are desired but not required.
- Furthermore, the ability to sit or stand for more than intervals of an hour are encouraged.
