Mercy Hospital’s 5B Orthopaedic Unit cares for planned orthopaedic post-op surgical patients (hip and knee replacements, spine, and neck surgeries), orthopaedic injuries (falls and car accidents), and trauma patients that don’t require critical care or are ready to come out of the ICU (gunshots, wounds, stabbings, car accidents, and traumatic falls).

This collaborative unit works with Orthopaedic Surgeons, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and the trauma team.

5B is known for their community outreach for various donation drives throughout the year and their phenomenal caregiver retention, as there are a lot of experienced caregivers who have been here for 8+ years.

A caregiver in this position works 7 : 00 P M 7 : 30AM and / or 11 : 00PM-7 : 30AM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will :

Provide direct nursing care.

Implement, monitor, evaluate, update and revise patient care plans.

Monitor, record, document and communicate patients’ conditions.

Administer prescribed medications and treatments.

Note and carry out physician and nursing orders.

Assess and coordinate patients’ discharge needs.

Educate patients and their families .

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include :

Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.

Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).

External applicants must have two years recent related experience. Internal applications with less than two years experience but post orientation / 90 day probationary period could be considered with CNO review and approval.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include :

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Personal Protective Equipment :

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
