The Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) is seeking a Research & Program Specialist to provide program coordination and content expertise in support of its portfolio of research and science projects addressing agriculture, food systems and public health issues.

The PS may also contribute to work based within a range of CLF focus areas, as assigned.

The PS is a core member of CLF's science unit team and contributes to CLF initiatives involving public health research and practice activities, primarily those related to the Center's strategic focus on food animal production and public health.

The PS works closely with and is supervised by CLF faculty.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support CLF's science unit by contributing to and coordinating the design and conduct of CLF priority research projects, including development of project proposals, review of scientific literature, preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, conduct of field work, data collection and analysis, and other tasks as needed.
  • Development of presentations for internal (i.e., for discussion of mid-stream work with CLF and JHU scientists) and external audiences (i.

e., for conference presentations or meetings with collaborating / partner organizations) to support communication and dissemination of CLF priority science contributions.

  • Work closely with CLF and other Johns Hopkins University (JHU) colleagues to engage and mobilize expertise to enable the provision of a range of technical, scientific and programmatic assistance on CLF priority research, policy, practice and advocacy projects.
  • Work with CLF scientific and communications staff and other scientific and advocacy partners to develop policy and communication materials and develop workplans for activities in support of CLF priority area projects.
  • Lead and contribute to the drafting of scientific manuscripts pertaining to CLF priority focus work, stay abreast of scientific literature relevant to CLF's work, generate research summaries on topics relevant to CLF's priority focus areas, gather and contribute to the analysis, synthesis and interpretation of data.
  • Serve as CLF's laboratory coordinator, both in terms of coordinating CLF-led work that utilizes laboratory resources, and for purposes of collaboration with other JHU (and external) researchers performing laboratory-based work on CLF projects.
  • Assist with laboratory supply purchases and Concur for CLF scientific research projects.
  • Initiate and manage the processing of internal approval documents, as well as other JHU, BSPH, or EHE required documentation, to ensure adherence to the CLF's and JHU policy and procedures.
  • Coordinate the implementation of project work plans supporting clear objectives that are aligned with the CLF priority goals.
  • Establish and maintain strong, positive working relationships with colleagues throughout CLF, JHU, and with partner organizations.
  • Perform other roles and responsibilities at CLF as assigned and agreed upon with the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Relevant work experience on food systems issues within an academic environment or with a non-profit organization is a plus.
  • Registered dietitian a plus.
  • Website design or marketing skills are also a plus.

Preferred Special Skills / Knowledge

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, nutrition, environmental sciences, or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated project management and research or evaluation experience.
  • Strong writing skill related to science translation.
  • Demonstrated critical thinker, problem solver, and skills in project management.
  • Exceptional organizational, writing, and research skills in public health and food system topic areas.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (oral and written) and interact with diverse groups of people within and outside the School, including faculty, program and administrative staff, and donor, to ensure that services and interactions are appropriate
  • Ability to read and synthesize a variety of scientific reports and papers and translate them for various audiences. integrating information from multiple sources
  • Ability to assess, plan and implement projects, and to manage and prioritize across multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in using MS Office Suite software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint -and experience in analysis and presentation of information.
  • Sensitivity to and commitment to the need for timely communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues as an effective team member.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive center.
  • Occasional domestic travel may be required.
