The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) provides leadership, resources, support, and accountability to the state’s 178 school districts, 1,888 schools, over 53,000 teachers, and over 3,200 administrators to help them build capacity to meet the needs of the state’s approximately 905,000 public school students.

Description of Job

Position Summary :

This position will be housed in the Dropout Prevention team and work closely with individuals across CDE to further develop CDE’s trainings and resources on student engagement and attendance.

In addition, this individual will work directly with school and district leaders to provide coaching, training, and facilitated learning opportunities.

The position will focus in two areas :

  • Lead Attendance Specialist : Lead CDE’s efforts to organize resources, materials, training, and information and serve as CDE’s lead for school and district guidance on improving student attendance and engagement in learning.
  • Grantee and District technical assistance : Organize events, develop materials, present, facilitate learning sessions and provide individual coaching for grantees of the Expelled and At-Risk Student Services, Student Re-engagement, and Ninth Grade Success grants.

Major Duties and Responsibilities :

Lead Attendance Specialist

  • Serve as the team’s lead for attendance efforts. Lead the collection and dissemination of effective practices, convening of districts, facilitation of planning and implementation support for schools and districts around student attendance and engagement.
  • Develop and lead collaborative learning opportunities such as learning cohorts for school and district staff to collaborate, observe practices in action, and participate in training.
  • Collaborate with School Improvement and School and District Transformation offices to develop tools, trainings, and guidance that support improved attendance and engagement.
  • Organize and lead CDE’s annual attendance awareness campaign.
  • Lead and support projects identified in CDE’s strategic plan related to student engagement.
  • Coordinate with other CDE offices within the Student Pathways & Engagement Unit to support improving student engagement and attendance.

Grantee and District technical assistance

  • Provide technical assistance and organize office initiatives to support the Expelled and At-risk Student Services (EARSS), Student Re-engagement and Ninth Grade Success Grant grantees.
  • Lead the Dropout Prevention Office’s annual grantee convenings including coordination with administrative staff, presenting and facilitating sessions.
  • Prepare, implement and present professional development offerings and deliver technical assistance to grantees and other school and district leaders.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :

Minimum four (4) years experience at the school, district, or state level in implementation or support of attendance improvement efforts.

Knowledge of and minimum two (2) years experience in designing and facilitating adult learning opportunities.

Minimum four (4) years experience with project management, including establishing goals and timetables, tactical plans, monitoring progress, engaging and working with other personnel or teams, measuring results, developing contingencies, and communication.

Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external customers (e.g. school districts, other CDE units).

Detailed analytical and problem-solving abilities including attention to detail, consistency, and accuracy.

Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as on a team.

Experience using the Microsoft suite, Google Suite, Zoom and other commonly used software.

Preferred Competencies :

  • Experience in facilitating groups of school staff in dropout prevention and intervention efforts at the high school level
  • School leadership experience
  • Experience working on an Alternative Education Campus
