Job Description
AECOM’s Design and Consulting Services-Americas legal department is actively seeking a creative, highly talented attorney to support AECOM’s operations in its East Region.
This will be a hybrid position including a combination of both remote and in-office with the expectation to go into the office at least 3 days a week.
This role can be based in larger AECOM offices located within the Mid-Atlantic to include, but not be limited to : Philadelphia, PA;
Arlington, VA; and Glen Allen, VA.
The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in construction law and legal issues related to contracts for engineering, construction, and other technical services.
The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to :
- Guidance on risk management and adherence to company policies
- Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, subcontracts and other legal documents relating to architecture, engineering, construction, environmental, and other services provided by the company to clients in the public and private sectors
- Act in an advisory capacity making recommendations that may have an important bearing on the conduct of the organization's business
- Work with management and staff to resolve pre-litigation disputes and potential claims
- Supervise and manage litigation, including professional liability, breach of contract, and personal injury / wrongful death matters
- Manage external counsel and litigation budgets
- Handle subpoenas, document requests, and other litigation related items with limited support staff
- Prepare and review disclosures to public agencies and support corporate secretary functions
- Review and conduct research into legislation, cases and legal precedents and emerging government policies
- Prepare and review legal memoranda and briefs relating to organizational risks and activities
- Provide staff with guidance on compliance with federal and provincial laws, statutes and regulations
- Provide support to multiple offices, and support other team members within the broader East Region as may be necessary based on experience and / or work loads
- Support the legal department’s goals of diversity, equity and inclusion amongst the legal department, the company and outside vendors.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements :
For Counsel :
BA / BS plus at least 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and / or education
For Sr. Counsel :
BA / BS plus at least 10 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and / or education
As well as :
- J.D. Degree from accredited law school
- Member in good standing with any U.S. state bar
- Demonstrated legal experience with a major engineering company, contractor, consultant or law firm in the areas of engineering and construction law
- Capable of presenting before senior management
- Capable of working independently with minimal oversight
- Demonstrated drafting and negotiation experience involving professional services and construction related agreements
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to travel periodically - approximately 10%
Preferred Qualifications :
- Prior experience at an engineering, architecture or construction company
- Claims / litigation handling, including management of outside counsel, relating to architecture, engineering, and construction issues
- Experience negotiating and drafting contracts for infrastructure projects procured and delivered through alternative delivery mechanisms
- Well-developed communications skills; ability to clearly and concisely express legal issues and analysis as it pertains to business and technical concerns
- Outgoing, personable and a team player
- Self-driven & resourceful to achieve goals independently and in groups
- Flexibility to adjust and thrive in an environment with changing requirements, schedules and priorities
- Ability to generate ideas, make recommendations & come to consensus
- Excellent writing, presentation, and meeting facilitation skills
