The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School is seeking a dynamic and accomplished leader to join as the inaugural Chief of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery within the Department of Surgery & Perioperative Care.

Eligible applicants will be board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology.

About the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care

The is comprised of faculty in broad specialties (anesthesiology, cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, emergency medicine, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery and urology) with a focus on delivering outstanding care to the community.

About the position

The Chief of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery will be the first hire into the Division and be the integral leader in the development and growth of the otolaryngology-head and neck surgery program, responsible for the recruitment, development and evaluation of faculty members across all three mission areas and representing the Division in relevant contexts at the level of the Department, Dell Med and external partners.

The Chief will be responsible for developing an ambitious specialty-focused otolaryngology-head and neck surgery practice at UT Health Austin, the clinical practice of Dell Medical School, with intention to become a local and regional referral center.

be an innovative self-starter with a commitment to excellence; and possess tenacity, self-motivation and initiative necessary to drive the development and maintenance of the otolaryngology-head and neck surgery program.

Essential Functions :

  • Working with leadership from the department and UT Health Austin, develop a strategic plan for growth and development of clinical and academic programs related to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery;
  • Oversight and provision of all aspects of clinical care for the otolaryngology-head and neck surgery service;
  • Build and sustain the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery by leading in the recruitment, onboarding, appointment and mentorship of faculty;
  • Help to build discipline-specific collaborations across health care systems; develop partnerships with referring physicians, hospitals, and ancillary providers in Austin and Central Texas;
  • Collaborate with the Associate Chairs of Clinical Integration & Operations, Education, and Investigation & Discovery to define and implement strategic goals related to the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery;
  • Actively participate in the academic department by participation in department leadership groups and abiding by all required departmental policies.

Qualifications

Required qualifications :

  • Medical degree from an accredited medical school;
  • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Texas (or the ability to obtain prior to appointment);
  • Current Board certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
  • Demonstrated leadership, clinical teaching, and evaluation and communication skills;
  • A track record of being able to lead, direct and influence a team (regardless of reporting lines). Demonstrates behaviors of a team player;
  • Eligible for appointment as an Associate or full Professor rank in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior leadership roles in an academic Department and / or health system
  • Familiarity and experience with value-based health care payment and delivery models
