About The Position

The Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Development will work with school leaders to build and guide a team of professionals charged with fostering the success of faculty and other non-faculty instructional staff.

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to faculty recruitment, appointment, promotion, development, credentialing, evaluation, and retention, institutional effectiveness, library, and as part of the leadership team strategic planning.

This person will work to create and sustain a professional and inclusive culture / climate and develop opportunities to support our faculty in providing the best medical education.

This position will report to the Dean.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with AWSOM administrators and faculty to develop and improve faculty related documents, policies and procedures
  • Manage faculty appointment and promotion processes
  • Oversee effective faculty recruitment processes that promote fairness, and advance and support the strategic plan of AWSOM
  • Develop programs to ensure faculty retention including comprehensive onboarding programs in collaboration with department leadership
  • Oversee library
  • Together with school and department leaders develop, promote, and implement initiatives focused on faculty development, mentoring and succession planning
  • Collaborate with AWSOM leaders and faculty to develop, implement and evaluate performance evaluation strategies, tools and indicators for faculty and other teaching staff
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate rewards and recognition programs to recognize faculty for their contributions to the AWSOM mission
  • Hire, supervise and evaluate staff within the Department of Faculty Affairs
  • Manage and coordinate faculty governance processes and activities (e.g., elections, committees)
  • Provide support to advance accreditation
  • Participate in standing committees of the faculty
  • Facilitate communication between the faculty and administrative leadership
  • Facilitate and oversee institutional effectiveness for the school.
  • All other duties as assigned
  • As the organization grows and matures, the reporting structure of this position may change.

Minimum Education

MD, DO or PhD with higher education administration or related field, or in medical / health-related field.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience specific to faculty affairs and / or faculty development in an LCME-accredited medical school
  • 3 years of increasing responsibilities overseeing faculty affairs and / or faculty development in a higher education / academic setting
  • Prior experience as a faculty member
  • Knowledge of faculty career cycle, policies and procedures
  • Experience handling sensitive and / or confidential information in a professional manner
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively in a diverse and rapid-paced academic medical environment

Preferred Work Experiences and Qualifications

  • Experience working with professional enhancement programs for populations under-represented in medicine (women, racial / ethnic minorities, first-generation students, etc.)
  • Experience creating and building new programs, initiatives, etc. designed to facilitate professional success among faculty
  • Experience in managing library services and institutional effectiveness processes.

About Us!

Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the School of Medicine, (formerly named Whole Health School of Medicine and Health Sciences), will offer a four-year, medical degree-granting program that integrates conventional medicine with holistic principles and self-care practices.

Taught by leading medical practitioners and scientific minds, the first-of-its-kind medical school will help students rise to the health challenges of the 21st century with a focus on mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health and will include an attached clinic for clinical training in these concepts.

The AWSOM programmatic and institutional accreditation. The School of Medicine received Candidate status with the Liaison Committee Medical Education in July 2023.

Construction of the 154,000 square-foot building is underway, with the goal of completing and welcoming the first class in Fall 2025, pending accreditation.

The School of Medicine will be located east of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, and connected through the trails to its sister organization, Whole Health Institute.

Faculty and staff members will contribute to the development and rollout of the ARCHES curriculum, which is built on evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning.

It includes the following six core elements :

  • H ealth Systems Sciences
  • E mbracing Whole Health
  • S cience of Medicine

All six areas of the curriculum will be interwoven throughout the four-year curriculum.
