The Lead Veterinary Technician’s primary goal is to oversee the veterinary technician team, ensuring compassionate care of every animal that enters the hospital.

They work hard to train, maintain and monitor that all hospital policies and procedures are followed. Lead by example while working side-by-side with fellow staff performing all general technician duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

General :

  • Recruit, train, maintain and retain top notch veterinary technicians.
  • Handle all veterinarian complaints and resolve client communication issues in a professional and timely fashion.
  • Work with the Practice Manager to create standard operating procedures / protocols (SOP), checklists and training protocols for all vet tech staff.
  • Managerial accountability over tech team including : hiring, training, evaluation, discipline and termination.
  • Assist with all technician daily, weekly and monthly duties including : cleaning and maintaining equipment, stocking and inventory, OSHA compliance and controlled drug log management.
  • Monitor patient flow from check-in to discharge.
  • Hospitals established policies and procedures.
  • Provide compassionate care to patients and clients.
  • Conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner.
  • Field questions and inquires about services, triage, and products.
  • Provide knowledgeable advice concerning the care and treatment of animals.
  • Know all veterinary drugs and protocols and be able to explain them.
  • Document legibly and keep accurate medical records in accordance hospital policy.
  • Maintain positive, cooperative relationships with supervisor and other employees.
  • Prep and assist veterinarian in all procedures.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Calculate and administer medications and fluids.
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia and effects of anesthetic on patient post op.
  • Perform venous punctures and place IV catheters.
  • Perform dentals.
  • Triage all pets upon arrival into facility, coordinating immediate care for all emergencies.
  • Take all radiographs as directed by doctor
  • Treat and care for all animals retained within the hospital, rounding several times while on shift.
  • Assist veterinarian in rooms, interacting with patient and clients.
  • Prepare vaccinations / tests / samples for all appointments.
  • Document all medical information as dictated by veterinarian
  • Enter all pertinent charges
  • Discharge all clients providing preventative, home care and prescription information.

QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE :

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • CVT for 3 years or at least 3 years experience on the job as a full time technician.
  • Able / willing to manage people efficiently in a busy hospital setting.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS :

  • Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instruction, short correspondence, and memos. Must be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Calculate mg / kgs and lbs into kgs.

Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS :

Current certification / licensure as a veterinary technician preferred.
