Position Information Position Title Director of Community Education FLSA Exempt FT / PT Full Time Hours Per Week Work Schedule M-F 8 : 30-5 Grade 17 General Responsibilities Serve as a leader of the community education’s team, in the community development and operations (CDO) unit, which includes programs for special populations, children, seniors, music institute, and other programs that provide enrichment and development opportunities for the community.
The Director of Community Education works closely with the Associate Vice President of Community Development and Operations (AVP CDO) to provide unit staff with effective and innovative leadership and advocacy.
This position will assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive vision for the community development (CD) unit which advances the mission of both the division and the college.
In addition, the Director of Community Education oversees all aspects of programming for the CDE team, assesses program effectiveness, and provides strategic direction for the unit. Work Performed
- Assist the AVP in the planning, organizing, and leading of work activities within the unit.
- Provide excellent service to students, such as dealing with student complaints; dealing with facilities problems; and being available during registration.
- Develop, disseminate, and implement college policies and procedures.
- Assist the AVP in the development and evaluation of long-range goals and objectives for the unit.
- Oversee the development and implementation of comprehensive programming for the CDE team.
- Provide direction, leadership and guidance for the strategic functions and activities of the CDE unit.
- Provide oversight on communication and marketing strategies as they pertain to community education.
- Work closely with the various college departments and academic divisions in order to improve current community development programs and cultivate new ones.
- Stay current on community education and development related trends in Howard County and Maryland.
- Act as a liaison between the College community and external vendors and represent the College at external community events.
- Assess community educational and career needs and areas for innovation and work with the unit program managers to develop specific courses, curriculum, and schedules to meet those needs and prospects.
- Build and cultivate strong relationships, partnerships, and strategic alliances with targeted key stakeholders both internally and externally.
- Develop partnerships with the Howard County community and organizations to foster continuous growth and innovation of community related educational enrichment programs.
- Participate in meetings and professional development activities, serve on committees, and represent the college at community / institutional functions in the areas that promote the success of the division and CDE unit.
- Oversee the licensing / grant requirements for all programs and work with unit program managers to ensure compliance, obtain approval and oversee documentation for CDE courses.
- Develop, plan and execute budget management for the CDE team through research, record-keeping, and cost analysis and monitor the overall financial performance of the unit.
- Support the AVP in planning, monitoring, and executing the unit budget.
- Support the culture of continuous improvement within the division.
- Oversee the preparation of and provide documents and statistical analysis and other reports for internal / external college, local, and state requirements.
- Inform the AVP CDO of the needs of the CDE team and communicate the division’s vision, priorities and goals to the unit staff.
- Assist the AVP CDO with the development, dissemination and implementation of the division’s policies and procedures.
- Oversee specific programming within the unit as assigned and execute all duties needed to successfully administer the program.
- Provide outreach to other college units regarding community education and enrichment programs.
- Fulfills all HCC requirements for annual staff development and diversity functions. Attends professional and technical training as needed to enhance or update skill set and increase understand of community related educational programs.

Minimum Number of Years Experience Required 5 Other Knowledge Required
Minimum of bachelor’s degree required with five years of administration and supervision experience in higher education or continuing education.
Master’s degree preferred.
- Background in training and teaching, course development, new program development, and project management required.
- Ability to analyze trends, assess programs, and execute regulations required.
- Prefer familiarity with Continuing Education State reporting and scheduling procedures.
- Strong analytical abilities.
