SUMMARY
- Under supervision of the Chief Engineer, Operates and tends to the hospital’s boiler, boiler auxiliary and other plant accessory equipment;
- control pumps and other auxiliary for proper functioning of facilities. Operates air conditioning equipment and air handling units;
operate the emergency generator when needed and manages the operation of the physical plant during his / her shift and maintain required logs / reports.
This candidate is required to respond to the hospital pager and to Support Services Administration.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned
- Under general supervision, performs normal repair work on buildings, furniture and equipment in an effective manner.
- Effectively operate and maintain boilers, fire pump and fire alarm system, air conditioning equipment and air handling units, air compressors domestic and hot water system, air conditioning and heating system, cooling towers, vacuum pumps, emergency generator, elevators, refrigerator equipment, etc.
to obtain a safe operable environment.
- Operates and maintains domestic water tanks and systems.
- Assist with sustaining inventory of parts and supplies, as needed.
- Responds to all fire alarms and disaster codes; effectively operates emergency equipment as needed.
- Demonstrates proficiency with power tools and equipment.
- Provides a safe environment for occupants of buildings and grounds.
- Maintains equipment for operable condition and accurately maintain daily logs on all equipment.
- Participates with conducting daily inspections of hospital areas; to ensure continuity of services.
- Supports the entire Plant Operations department to meet the goals and objectives of Support Services.
- Manages time in a productive and reliable manner, completing work assignments.
- The ability to except or respond to change in a manner that promotes and supports departmental / hospital goals and objectives, is essential.
- Is knowledgeable of and follows safety / infection control policies and other procedures to ensure a safe environment for self and others;
addresses potential safety concerns related to equipment and the working environment.
Provides and give cooperative and courteous service to patients, visitors, staff, physicians, volunteers and other internal / external customers;
ensuring that communication and job activity result in a positive customer experience.
- Operate power tools and equipment : electric drills, sander, scroll saw, table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, etc.
- Adjusts work schedule to accommodate changing priorities of the hospital.
- Follows established emergency, infection control and / or universal precautions and procedures as required.
- Attends mandatory in-service(s) related to safety and / or infection control.
- Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Hospital regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist
- and as they are modified.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, relevant to the job.
JOB REQUIREMENTS :
A valid Stationary Engineer’s license from the City of Chicago is required. High school graduate is preferred. Previous courses in Shop and Shop Mathematics is desired.
Must have three years’ experience in general maintenance and repair work. The candidate must meet physical demands of this job.
In addition, the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, floor plans, schematics, diagrams, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals is necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee is occasionally required to talk, hear, taste and / or smell. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 50 pounds.
