Position : Executive Director

Location : New York City, New York

Reports to : Chairperson HILC Board of Directors

Job Type : Full time, Salaried (100k+)

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities :

  • Coordinates the logistics for all committee and board meetings and maintains required board documentation, including all meeting minutes.
  • Ensures that the programs and services of the agency are consistent with the needs of constituents and the mission of the organization.
  • Recruits and develops a dedicated staff by providing the necessary experience and skills to maximize their job performance.
  • Provides direct supervision to staff.
  • Facilitates development, implementation, and review of the HILC five-year strategic plan.
  • Develops and manages annual budget and monitors expenditures, assuring financial success of the agency.
  • Ensure compliance with all rules, regulations, laws, policies, and procedures applicable to the program.
  • Upholds and implements Independent Living Philosophy and Center Mission core values.
  • Manages the compilation of Federal and State reports for the Center’s activities and submits promptly.
  • Manages the supervision of grant writing and research funding opportunities.
  • Serves as HILC’s representative to outside agencies, committees, panels, meetings, conventions. Selecting / delegating appropriate staff for the same.
  • Prepares and submits timely progress reports to funding sources and the HILC Board of Directors.
  • Acts as official agent for the agency including signing all notes, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Pursues and manages public funds and contracts and maintains compliance with funder requirements.
  • Cultivates relationships with community leaders and stakeholders to advocate systemic change on behalf of the disability community.
  • Represents the disability constituency through participation in community groups and events.
  • Acts as the chief spokesperson to the press and the community on issues affecting HILC and / or the disability community.
  • Other job-related duties as required.

Required Qualifications :

  • Minimum of 10 years advocacy, administrative, supervisory, and regulatory experience in an Independent Living Center (ILC) or board-governed non-profit organization.
  • Be familiar with all Federal and State Americans with Disability Act (ADA) laws and mandates.
  • Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Independent Living philosophy.
  • Experience leading an effective and comprehensive fund development strategy that includes multiple approaches such as grant writing, donor solicitation, and coordination of special events.
  • Ability to effectively use computerized data and information management systems, as well as word processing and accounting software.
  • Proven ability to develop and monitor services to persons with disabilities.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to communicate effectively in English.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Experience in negotiating agreements, contracts, and strategic partnerships.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess situations, anticipate needs, work in groups as well as independently.
  • Able to take initiative, advocate, organize, prioritize, meet deadlines, and handle stressful situations.
  • Able to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret organization’s goals, objectives, policies, and procedures, as well as those of the Community.

Additional Attributes :

  • Able to train, coach and mentor staff.
  • Able to demonstrate flexibility in approaching problems, presenting a calm manner towards staff and the community of people with disabilities.
  • Personal experience with disabilities.
  • Program development and management experience in an Independent Living Center or other disability-related, grass roots organization.
  • Bilingual in English, American Sign Language, Spanish, or other languages frequently used in the HILC service area.
  • Ongoing professional development endeavors such as active membership in professional associations, completion of matter.
  • Ten years of documented management experience in advocacy service.
