The Babler Outdoor Education Center is located in Babler State Park and managed by the Rockwood School District.
It serves as a rental facility and provides outdoor education programs to organized groups between 10 and 160
people. Many schools and school districts utilize the facility for field trips and overnight camps. Community and
church groups rent the facility and request teambuilding and other programming. OEC Instructors work with many
ages and ability levels. Work hours and job responsibilities vary depending on the season. Instructors may select
hours and shifts that best fit their availability and interests. Additional hours leading other Community Education
programs are available on a seasonal basis.
The main responsibilities are listed below.
Payment is an hourly rate of $21 / hr
Dates and hours vary. Available shifts include 4-8 hour, day or evening.
This position is responsible for the following :
- Lead camp programs according to lesson plan in outdoor / out of classroom environment
- Set-up and clean-up of camp classes and programs
- Study and understand program information and help create curriculum
- Lead evening / weekend programs such as hikes, campfire or games
- Recognize problems and report them to OEC staff
- Clean camp facility / sweep / disinfect as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Important Information about the position :
- Instructors will be trained on-site for all programs / activities they are expected to lead.
- As new programs are developed, instructor input and knowledge is encouraged and expected.
- Instructors are expected to arrive to set up 30-45 minutes prior to their assigned program.
- Instructors are expected to clean up program area at the end of the program day.
Outdoor Education Camps
As part of 5th, 6th or 7th grade school curriculum, students in teams of 30-160 students participate in an
overnight / multi-night program based at the Babler Outdoor Education Center. Students participate in 2-8
different classes throughout their stay that are taught by teachers and OEC Instructors. They spend the
night in heated cabins and eat meals in the dining hall. There is a nurse on site for all school overnight
programs and parents or teachers chaperone students in cabins.
- Outdoor Education Camps can be as short 1 day or as long as a 4 days, 3 nights.
- Students participate in 2 to 4 classes per day led by instructors and / or teachers.
- Instructors will help meal host or set-up, serve and clean up from meals as needed.
- When not leading a program, instructors are responsible for a variety of other logistic needs such as
delivering snack, cleaning, organizing program supplies etc.
Instructors will also be responsible for evening program such as a night hike, campfire or other program
chosen by the school.
