The Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Technology Studies at the University of Alabama invites applications for an Assistant / Associate Professor of Social and Cultural Studies in Education.

A successful candidate will have a strong potential to conduct high-quality research leading to publication, and teaching excellence / experience at the undergraduate and / or graduate level(s).

The Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Technology Studies at the University of Alabama invites applications for an Assistant / Associate Professor in Social and Cultural Studies in Education with specialization in one or more of the Foundations disciplines (sociology, history, anthropology, philosophy, curriculum theory, education policy).

In addition to teaching required courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels across the College, the Social and Cultural Studies in Education (SCSE) faculty offer an Instructional Leadership PhD with a concentration in Social and Cultural Studies in Education, a graduate certificate in Social and Cultural Studies in Education, and an undergraduate minor in Education Policy and Reform.

SCSE program and course offerings aim to develop scholars, researchers, and instructional leaders for schools and colleges guided by the principles of reflective practice, professional growth, democratic action, and individual responsibility.

The successful candidate will join 30 active research and teaching faculty in the department as well as a vibrant student community.

Responsibilities :

The ideal candidate would contribute to teaching, research, and service as follows :

  • Pursue a rigorous and innovative line of research and actively seek external funding
  • Teach undergraduate preservice teacher education courses and supervise graduate assistants teaching similar courses.
  • Teach Masters, EdS, EdD, and PhD "service" courses across COE degree programs (e.g., Educational Leadership, Higher Education, Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction) offered in face-to-face, online or Weekend College format, per the needs of the programs.
  • Teach and manage undergraduate courses in the Educational Policy and Reform minor.
  • Teach PhD courses for doctoral students in SCSE and chair and / or serve on doctoral dissertation committees.
  • Teach EdD courses for students in the Instructional Leadership Program with a concentration in Nurse Education program.

The position start date is August 16, 2025.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in any field in the Philosophical, Historical, and Social Foundations of Education with specialization in one of the following disciplines : history, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, curriculum theory, educational policy (K-12 and other tertiary programs), philosophy of science, public historiography or any related specialization.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a strong research agenda in one of the areas of expertise noted above.
  • Familiarity with basic principles governing K-12 operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to pursue and procure grants that align with and support one's research agenda and that advance programmatic goals.
  • Ability to effectively mentor graduate students, chair dissertations, and serve on dissertation committees.
  • For those applying at the associate level, a record of research, teaching and service commensurate with this rank.
