About the Department
This position will reside in The Board Assembly Team. The Board Assembly team is a subset of the Production Department. The Board Assembly team is responsible for the creation of over 200 unique PCB assemblies that are crucial to the sustenance of SparkFun's product offerings.
The team is comprised of many unique individuals, each bringing their own set of skills and abilities. Quality, consistency, and efficiency are the driving metrics within The Board Assembly team.
SparkFun's Next Final Board Assembly Technician
The Final Board Assembly Technician is responsible for completing the PCB assembly, and ensuring it is ready for customer use.
This includes any rework needed to fix the assembly, final test code and / or bootloader code uploading, and 100% in-circuit testing of every product to ensure full functionality.
Working closely with all other members of The Board Assembly Team, the Final Board Assembly Technician will ensure that SparkFun built products are available for sale at all times, and replenished as quickly as possible when they run out.
The right candidate will have a strong attention to detail, being able to spot errors or potential errors quickly and take action to correct them.
In addition, this ideal candidate will be able to take on repetitive tasks without losing focus or speed.
Essential Job Functions
Assemble & rework circuit boards
- Receive daily batches from Lead Final Assembly Technician or Board Assembly Manager
- Handle all assembly & rework stages of the build process using equipment such as soldering irons and hot air rework tools
- Hand solder, both PTH(plated through hole) and SMD(surface mount device), components efficiently
- Read and understand a Bill of Materials (BOM) for initial assessment of the build & trouble-shooting
- Inspect & identify errors on all components used in circuit board population
Test circuit boards :
- Utilizing the internal ERP system, follow written test procedures to test full functionality of most assemblies
- When applicable, utilize a general understanding of electronics to perform "visual inspection" of boards to identify errors
Quality control inspection of all completed batches :
- Follow established procedures to ensure functional circuit boards are being completed in the build process, including 25% and 100% inspection of completed circuit boards
- Document and deliver erroneous boards, and communicate potential course of action
Maintain an organized & clean work space :
- Keep workstation, inventory, & all other Board Assembly areas clean & organized
- Participate in monthly warehouse cleaning
- Check emails multiple times throughout the day
Preferred Skills and Abilities :
- Attention to detail, time management, & problem-solving skills
- Experience in PTH population and soldering
- Experience in SMD solder paste printing & SMD hand population
- Consistent work habits, including reliability, punctuality, honesty, & self-motivation
- Experience with Google’s Suite of Products (i.e. GMail, Google Calendar, Docs, etc.)
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Additional Skills (not required or preferred, just bonus skills) :
- Communication skills, both written and verbal
- Willingness to participate in team events
Requirements : No prior assembly experience is necessary. Will train the right person(s). However, basic knowledge of soldering and electronics is a PLUS.
Ability to multi-task and be FLEXIBLE is a MUST. This is a fast paced and dynamic environment, offering first hand experience in small electronics assembly.
