The UCSD Mathematics Department is a dynamic unit comprising 67 faculty members, along with approximately 40 additional non-FTEs holding various instructional and research titles.

These academics engage in a wide range of research activities funded by federal, state, and private agencies. The department includes 19 career staff members, as well as 180 Master's and Ph.

D. students, and over 2400 undergraduate students. Together, they collaborate to produce high-caliber research across diverse fields, offering an exceptional graduate program that attracts top-ranked students and enhances the department's academic reputation.

Furthermore, the department oversees a substantial undergraduate program that equips both pure and applied majors (over 2400 students) in Mathematics, along with 57 majors from other disciplines across the campus.

This comprehensive education provides students with a strong foundational background in mathematics, preparing them for success in various career paths.

The faculty actively participates in a robust research program, boasting an average of 72 active awards in interdisciplinary areas, totaling approximately $20 million per year.

Simultaneously, the instructional program enrolls around 30,000 graduate and undergraduate students annually.Recognized as the fundamental language of science, mathematics serves as an indispensable intellectual tool essential for a well-trained workforce to drive future technological advancements.

The department is also home to The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCoM), which brings together a diverse group of faculty, researchers, and students sharing a common interest in the mathematical aspects of computation.

Additionally, the department serves as the base for the Director of the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project, an intersegmental education initiative in California.

Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department / school / college management.

Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

Under the supervision of the Student Affairs Manager, as Advising Officer, this position will provide professional staff support for the administration and implementation of the Undergraduate and Graduate educational program in the Department of Mathematics.

Incumbent will ensure that all students are making progress towards their degree and career goals while remaining within established university and program guidelines and regulations.

Will work as an important part of the Mathematics Student Affairs unit to support faculty initiatives to encourage students’ academic achievement.

Independently responsible for student affairs functions related to training grants program - including all advising, administration, management and reporting requirements related to the implementation of the student components of departmental training grants.

Major functional areas include student advising (Undergraduate and Graduate), outreach, and departmental and institutional development.

Must be available to work occasional overtime during evenings and weekends as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Proven experience in counseling undergraduates and graduates on programs and curriculum. Evaluate academic records and make analytical decisions.

Skill in presenting information about courses, curricula, programs, and career options to small and large groups of people in an organized comprehensive manner.

Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding academic, financial, payroll, and personnel information in accordance with all applicable Federal and State laws.

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread correspondence and narrative sections of printed information.

Ability to express verbally, or in writing, one's position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.

Interpersonal skills.

Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Ability to work well independently and as a team with a diverse client base (faculty, staff, students, other UC departments, and the general public) in a customer service environment.

Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Excellent organizational skills, attention to accuracy and detail, creative problem-solving skills, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks that have conflicting priorities and deadlines.

Ability to develop, plan, and execute workshops, orientations, seminars, and other student programming efforts.

Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Ability to gather, interpret, analyze and present statistical data.

Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills. Ability to plan, develop, implement, manage, and evaluate multiple programmatic activities independently and in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $52,100 - $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $24.95 - $42.10

The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.

The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
