The Kellar School Counselor works within a defined schedule during a 10.5-month academic year. All hours and job duties are applicable to 10.
5 months. The Kellar School Counselor works under clinical supervision for all duties and responsibilities. Supports the clinically informed educational interventions for enrolled students using evidence-based, best practices and supports students in maintaining and progressing through the standards of learning, approved by the Virginia Department of Education.
Integrates a variety of clinical and behavioral interventions using information related to cultural, clinical, ethnic, age, educational trajectory, and other factors into the plan of care.
Provides primary case management, facilitates support groups within an approved curriculum related to mental health, medical diagnosis, family / peer relationships, substance abuse, and impact, etc.
Ensures ongoing communication across Inova, partner jurisdiction liaisons, and families related to student strengths and weaknesses and progress within the student's IEP and education.

Job Responsibilities :
Works within a defined schedule during a 10.5-month academic year. All hours and job duties are applicable to 10.5 months.
- Provides a range of clinical interventions, psycho-educational programming, and behavioral interventions (when indicated) to assist the student in active and substantive engagement in school programming related to a student's individualized education plan and academics in efforts to achieve the assigned diploma.
- Provides necessary counseling-related services dictated by a student's IEP with a caseload of between 12-14 students.
- May support students presenting with acute behavioral and mental health challenges that impact their abilities to fully access learning environments in real time to reinforce clinical interventions, and supports a defined behavioral management system, and student behavioral accountability related to school-wide behavioral expectations.
- Provides both the family and partner jurisdiction liaisons timely communication and updated documentation referencing student progress in coordination with the school grading periods, and other contractual timelines with community payers, including IEP drafts and revisions and other Special Education documentation requirements.
- Uses data analysis to determine primary areas of both academic and behavioral needs and the necessary goals and accommodations to support student progress.
- Adjusts practice, communication, and documentation nuances across the student population based on Virginia Department of Education and individual contract agreement variations.
- Adheres to Inova Health System's Culture of Safety and participates in maintaining a professional culture throughout the organization.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Experience :
Internship in mental health, substance use disorder treatment or school counseling, working with children completed within 90 days of employment
Education :
Master's Degree Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, School Counseling from a CARF accredited University, Guidance Counseling
Certifications :
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association. Within 3 months
- Crisis Prevention. Within 6 months
Licensure :
