GENERAL SUMMARY : Delivers, implements, and evaluates nursing care to assigned patients under supervision of a registered nurse and is accountable for patient care administered during the shift.
Provides patient care activities to patients of diverse ages.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Administers nursing care to patients under the direction of the registered nurse; includes assessing patients, implementing patient's plan of care, and evaluating the patient's response to care in coordination with the physician.
- Provides patient / family or caregiver education as directed. - Utilizes hospital information system to process orders / data and retrieve patient information.
- Is knowledgeable in delegation of tasks to certified nursing assistants, patient care technicians and nursing technicians with patients.
- Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for patients' records. - Works under direct supervision using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, and nursing judgment.
- Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance, and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, drainage devices).
- Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled. - Initiates emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).
- Takes assigned call as defined in unit policy.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS : Assists with patient care duties / tasks (i.e., emptying drainage devices, ambulating, and hygiene).
- Assists with clerical duties (i.e., maintenance of chart, patient record, answering phones and call lights, processing physician orders).
- Maintains patient care supplies, equipment, and environment. - Provides orientation / education for staff, students, and health care members as directed.
- Effectively assumes job responsibilities of ancillary support during absence.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :
Possession of a current license as a practical nurse issued by the State of Iowa.
Successfully completes required medication examination prior to passing medication.
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter Child and / or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
BLS certified by the end of the orientation period (approximately six (6) weeks).
