The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) seeks an Agency Attorney who will serve as an EEO Attorney Investigator.

Reporting directly to OCME’s EEO Officer, the selected candidate, under general direction, with wide latitude for independent action, will work to ensure proper and consistent implementation of the City’s EEO policy.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Conduct fact finding investigations concerning complaints of discrimination filed by employees
  • Interviews complainants, witnesses, and respondents to obtain facts relevant to charges of discriminatory employment practices
  • Collects documentation about agency policies and procedures and statistical evidence relevant to the complaint of discrimination.
  • Prepares investigative plans and reports, outlining case questions to be asked and determining which documents to request
  • Provides guidance to managers, supervisors, and employees on EEO matters
  • Acts as liaison with executives within the agency and with DCAS and other city agencies
  • Plans, develops, and conducts and maintains records EEO, and Equity and Inclusion training
  • Researches and evaluates reasonable accommodation requests
  • Participates in the development and operation of a comprehensive EEO program; plans and ensures the dissemination of the City’s EEO policy and information on employees' rights and responsibilities to employees
  • Monitors agency compliance with the City’s EEO policy.
  • May prepares legal memoranda, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.

2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or

3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne .

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.

In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements :

To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and / or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
