Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
About the Role
The Director of Scholarships and Financial Aid oversees all financial aid-related responsibilities and functions for the university.
This individual is tasked with maintaining full compliance with federal and state laws governing financial aid and provides leadership in establishing effective financial aid policies and procedures for the undergraduate and graduate student populations.
Additionally, the director has a hands-on role in assisting both prospective and current students with their financial aid packages and requests.
This position reports to the Vice President for Enrollment Management (VPEM) and supervises the Senior Financial Aid Counselor and Financial Aid Advisor.
Specific duties include the following :
- Monitor all functions of the Office of Scholarships and Financial Assistance to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and integrity
- Supervise, support, train, and evaluate staff
- Award, review, and authorize aid for prospective and active undergraduate and graduate students
- Manage and reconcile federal and state grant programs
- Monitor satisfactory academic progress of all student populations to adhere to institutional and federal policies concerning distribution of aid
- Test and update the financial aid module of the university’s Banner database
- Complete all surveys and reports for the office including, but not limited to, FISAP, IPEDS, various state reports for SCHEV, Common Data Set (section H), NCAA, S.
News & World Report annual survey, NACUBO, and data requests from other campus offices
- Oversee the annual A-133 audit preparation activities
- Identify appropriate recipients for various endowed scholarships and reconcile the funds
- Counsel students on financial literacy and student loans
- Manage the federal and institutional student employment programs, including oversight of the Senior Financial Aid Counselor’s placements of and contracts for students
- Support returning and new student orientations by fulfilling financial aid responsibilities
- In collaboration with the VPEM, develop and update marketing materials for the office, such as an annual financial aid brochure utilized by the Office of Admission
- Monitor federal student loan default rates and take corrective actions, if necessary, to maintain a low default rate
- Oversee Hollins’ federal Perkins loan servicer’s activities for compliance in the Perkins loan portfolio
- Fulfill data requests as needed on behalf of the VPEM in support of reports for the Board of Trustees and university Cabinet
- Collaborate with the VPEM, Financial Aid staff, and any appointed campus partners to inform others about the university’s scholarship and financial aid strategy
- Liaise with other departments on campus including the Registrar’s Office, Business Office, and Human Resources
- Remain up-to-date on federal and state financial aid laws, issues, trends, and best practices
Position Qualifications
Successful applicants must have the following qualifications and experience :
- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of three years of progressive higher education financial aid experience
- Knowledge of laws that govern higher education financial assistance
- Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, customer service, organizational, detail, accuracy, data extraction, statistical reporting, project management, and problem-solving skills
- Abilities to multitask, meet deadlines, handle sensitive matters, use sound judgment, exhibit discretion, maintain confidentiality, and work well with students
- Public speaking experience
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Office
Preferred candidates will have the following :
- Master’s degree
- Experience with Ellucian Banner and / or Technolutions Slate
- Supervisory experience
