FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE :
- Assists department supervision in planning and directing the work with responsibilities for maintenance and repair of WS / FCS school buildings and support facilities in commercial painting and surface finish trades.
- May assume the responsibilities of the Assistant Supervisor during their absence.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Assists supervision to plan, direct and inspect the work of several small crews. Work involves assisting the department Supervisor with purchasing material, supplies and equipment, coordinating work with contractors and school officials, and inspecting contracted work.
Work is performed independently in varying weather conditions and requires emergency on-call and standby duties. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Department Supervisor and is evaluated through observation, discussion, review of records, public acceptance and adherence to trad maintenance and repair standards.
- Requires advanced journey level knowledge in the commercial painting and finished surfaces trades, significant independent judgement, and initiative.
- Actively engage on a regular daily basis with the division's work order system.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic computer programs (Microsoft Word and Excel).
- Assigns individual employees and teams to perform routine and emergency work orders and inspects the work of trade employees for adherence to department and trade standards.
- Evaluates employee job performance, counseling and coaching employees when required. Provides feedback to Department Supervisor in coordinating employee training and maintaining employee attendance records.
- Oversees work being performed by outside contractors.
- Purchases and maintains an appropriate inventory of material, supplies, and tools.
- Reviews and maintains preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for equipment.
- Performs related duties as required and / or assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of trades related to the work.
- Thorough knowledge of painting and finished surface material.
- Thorough knowledge of methods, tools and equipment used in assigned trades.
- Thorough knowledge of state and local laws, regulations, building, and fire codes related to the work.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions in the work.
- General knowledge of WS / FCS personnel, purchasing and budgeting policies and procedures.
- Ability to train subordinates in methods, procedures, and skills.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to issue clear and understandable written and oral instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret manufacturer's literature, drawings, and schematics.
- Ability to operate vehicles safely.
- Ability to maintain, compile, and analyze manual and computerized records and reports.
- Ability to exercise the physical strength and agility necessary to perform job tasks.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and school personnel.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :
- Minimum : Graduation from High School or equivalent and five years' work experience at a journey level or above; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Desirable : Course work in the department's trades area, and 5 years' work experience, including some lead worker or supervisory experience.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS :
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
