Job Description :

The Boston Globe is hiring a reporter for the Money, Power, Inequality team, a groundbreaking initiative to explore the racial wealth gap in Boston and beyond.

Boston is becoming increasingly diverse, with a majority of its residents people of color. Still, the city continues to grapple with a racist history that has reverberated through all facets of life today and has created systemic inequities that have made it difficult for many to build a prosperous life.

The Boston Globe is looking for a journalist who can unpack Greater Boston's racial wealth gap, laying focus on systems and institutions that have failed Black and brown communities.

The reporter should be well-equipped to tackle such accountability and enterprise stories in a human-centered way that properly conveys the context and nuance of this complex topic.

Money, Power, Inequality is a long-term, grant-funded initiative supported by the Barr Foundation. The Globe will maintain complete editorial control over story selection, reporting, and editing.

We're looking for someone who :

  • Has a track record of producing accountability stories that have led to discernable change and shaped reforms.
  • Will pivot between breaking news and enterprise projects that could take weeks or months to execute.
  • Writes clean, compelling copy on deadline.
  • Has a great work ethic and positive attitude.
  • Is well-sourced or knows how to build a source network quickly.
  • Is creative, enterprising and curious. You see fresh angles to storylines everywhere and you're a newshound who still gets a rush when you beat the competition.
  • Will participate in virtual or in-person events or forums, which promote our stories, engage the community, and expand the audience for our journalism.

Responsibilities :

  • Produce high-impact journalism, both daily and enterprise, for publication online and in print.
  • Author journalism that offers readers both the analysis and authoritative explanatory take that is the hallmark of Globe journalism.
  • Work with visual and digital specialists to create rich, unforgettable displays, and embrace alternative storytelling formats.

Qualifications :

  • At least 5 years of experience in journalism preferred
  • Experience working for a daily news organization preferred
  • Prior experience covering topics of race, economics, and inequality preferred
  • Past experience with in-depth enterprise and investigative work is preferred
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
  • A commitment to creating an inclusive work environment and embracing the Globe's priorities regarding diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in our coverage
  • Team player willing to work closely and collaboratively with other members of the Money, Power, Inequality team and across the newsroom
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines.

This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
