Description
Under general supervision, performs daily activities associated with maintaining good potable water quality, adequate flow through the water system, inspecting maintenance and construction crew activities to ensure proper installation of water system facilities, and ensure regulatory compliance.
Examples of Duties
WORK ACTIVITIES :
Assists the Chief Distribution Operator in coordinating water system operations associated with the work of repair crews within the Division.
Assists in monitoring and inspecting the work of pipeline repair crews; and provides guidance in work tasks.
- Assists the Chief Distribution Operator in training workers in the safe and proper operation of equipment and tools and performing job tasks and ensures workers wear appropriate safety equipment and instructs workers in the proper and most expedient method to accomplish assignments.
- Identifies and reports hazards and liability exposures and immediately takes action for corrective measures.
- Informs supervisor of potential hazards, problem areas, public inquiries, and the status of other work activities.
- Properly operates and maintains transmission and distribution valves throughout the water system.
- Ensures regulatory compliance in line flushing, bacteriological sample collection, disinfection, pressure monitoring, and construction inspection.
- Ensures customers are notified of water outages, both emergency and scheduled activities.
- Participates in asset management program activities that involve collecting and documenting information of every system valve.
- Prioritizes and investigates customer complaints and calls relating to water quality issues, leaks, and pressure complaints.
- Participates in CIP and Development planning, providing system information for current and future projects.
- Adheres to the personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
- Informs the Chief Operator of all work activities.
- Assists other coworkers as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS :
- Must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- Must possess a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Water Distribution Operator Certificate.
- Must be able to complete and pass the written test for a valid Texas CDL "A" Driver's License, without restriction "L" and with proper endorsements within 90 days of hire.
You must provide proof of your scheduled driving test appointment with the Texas Department of Public Safety to your supervisor within 90 days from the day you pass the written test.
Your driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
W ORK EXPERIENCE :
One or more years of experience in water distribution and maintenance, and system operation is required.
Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history.)
Desired Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES :
- Good knowledge of the principles and practices of water system operation, and water system hydraulics.
- Good knowledge and skill needed for the proper use of equipment, and materials used in maintenance, repair, and construction of a water distribution system.
- Good knowledge of the state and federal health codes governing public water system design and operation.
- Good knowledge of and ability to use personal computers including spreadsheets and word processing software applications.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be able to read and comprehend blueprints, maps, manuals, and regulations; follow oral and written directives, have good hand / foot / eye coordination to operate equipment.
- Must be available to work after hours, and participate in an on-call rotation.

and work in adverse environmental conditions to include inclement weather, hazardous conditions including mechanical, dust / mist, poor illumination, and chemical hazards.
