POSITION DESCRIPTION :
Leads Swim Team participants through workouts and maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas.
Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
This position is responsible for the year-round administration, supervision, and leadership of the branches Swim Team Program to include but not limited to its practices, swim meets, parent meetings / orientations, and team events.
- The Swim Team Coach is also accountable for maintaining the highest level of safety for all participants in the pool area;
- first, by preventing accidents and second, by responding to an emergency quickly and efficiently. The Swim Team Coach is responsible for member, parent, and volunteer satisfaction, involvement, and retention;
implementing the Core Values in program design and content; and creating an enjoyable environment for all members and parents.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A GE : Minimum age of 21
- MANDATORY CERTIFICATIONS :
- Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguarding, American Safety & Health Institute or American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR for the Professional Rescuer and American Safety & Health Institute, American Red Cross or American Heart Association Standard / Community First Aid certifications
- Current Basic Life Support
- Principles of Swimming and Diving
- American Red Cross Swim Coaches' Safety Training
- RELATED EXPERIENCE :
- 2-3 years competitive swim experience and / or thorough knowledge of competitive swimming, including current techniques, USS rules, meet operation, etc.
- At least 1 years of coaching experience or 5 years of swim instruction experience
- SPECIALIZED SKILLS : Ability to maintain required certification; Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- PREFFERRED SCHEDULE AVAILABILTY : year-round weekday practices in the afternoons, full weekends during the competitive season.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides continuous, uninterrupted supervision of swim team participants during practice.
- Reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Completes related reports as required.
- Follows Minimum Standards of Safety for Aquatic Activities 7.301 . Understands and consistently enforces safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintains accurate and up to date attendance records of participants.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Plays an active role in continuing to identify ways to improve coaching techniques 7. Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff.
- Continuously monitors aquatic area for hazardous or unsafe conditions. Immediately reports all hazardous or unsafe conditions to management and takes appropriate action.
- Uses problem solving skills to make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and recognize the potential for danger or injury.
- Provides administrative support on obtaining all the required paperwork from all participants needed to be properly registered for the swim league.
- Ensures all meet entries are submitted directly to the league coordinator and request payment check from the Accounts Payable department.
- Maintains a positive and continuous relationship with all parents through on going in person communication along with team updates through email.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.
- Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character (Trustworthiness, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Fairness) as well as the YMCA Core Values of caring, respect, honesty and responsibility in all dealings with members, guests, volunteers and fellow staff.

- All other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
EFFECT ON END RESULTS
The Swim Team Head Coach has a primary impact on the effectiveness with which the branch accomplishes its goals and objectives relative to member satisfaction, retention, and involvement through the swim team program.
This is evidenced by :
- The branch's ability to make its fiscal goal.
- A steady growth or stasis of the number of swim team participants and volunteers / members involved at the YMCA facility and in YMCA community programs.
- The regular involvement of swim team participant and parents in a purposeful way that creates co-owners and co-producers.
- Maintain a positive level of communication with the entire swim team community.
- High morale of the employed and volunteer staff, and effective involvement with members, volunteers, and community liaisons.
- Professional and courteous communication, well-coordinated events and activities, good public relations, and sound program records systems.
- The demonstration of competence and exercise of good judgment in meeting the objectives related to the position and, as a result, accomplishing the goals of the organization.
