Job Summary

Scottsdale Community College (SCC) is seeking a full-time Physics Faculty starting August 2025. This position will teach Physics courses including introductory physics, general physics, and calculus-based physics.

Both day and evening instruction may be required. The Physics Faculty will provide effective physics instruction to students from diverse backgrounds and cultures in both classroom and laboratory settings.

This position will be active in division and program projects and professional growth endeavors; providing leadership to adjunct faculty;

using instructional technologies and incorporating active and collaborative learning techniques. Instruction modality could entail : in person, hybrid and / or online.

To best serve the students, department, and college, this position requires a physical presence on campus, with the possibility of partial remote work depending on college needs.

Essential Functions

Instruction : Supervises and instructs students of various ages and diverse backgrounds in classroom, online, and / or lab settings.

Instructing students in physics courses, with an emphasis on developing the students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

This includes utilizing various teaching methods to promote effective learning in students with diverse abilities, levels of academic preparation, ages, and socio-economic / cultural backgrounds.

  • Course Development : Designs and develops written syllabi / course outlines, curricula, and instructional materials. This includes evaluating students' comprehension of the subject matter being taught by making and grading assignments, projects, quizzes, and exams.
  • Student Advisement : Maintains office hours to assist and advise students; participates in department, campus, and district-wide committees.

Holding academic support hours for students, with the purpose of answering questions that students may have over the subject matters being taught and / or providing academic advisement to students planning to major in a STEM discipline.

Committees : Contributes to college governance by serving on college and / or district committees. This also includes collaborating with the Physics Instructional Council faculty in developing course and program curriculum;

contributing to the Physics department's program reviews and improvement initiatives; building and maintaining collaborative external partnerships.

Professional Growth : Engages in professional growth opportunities to enhance subject knowledge and develop pedagogical skills.

Physics faculty members are expected to model the profession's high standards through their commitment to excellence, innovation, integrity, and teamwork.

Thus, it is necessary for all Physics faculty within the department to work together and keep their knowledge up to date to assure the students within the program are learning the newest skills expected of Physics graduates.

Professional growth opportunities may be external, such as attending national or regional conferences, or internal, such as attending college or department training sessions.

Resources : Assists the division chair / director in deciding the best use of the department's funds and other resources to support the incorporation of technology into an integrated lecture / lab setting.

This includes working with student workers and lab technicians to provide them with guidance in the setup of equipment in the classrooms and the maintenance of tools in the Physics stockroom.

  • Student Success : Leading the departmental efforts to build and maintain the Physics program at SCC. This requires a commitment to student success and working together with other SCC employees on student recruitment initiatives and community outreach efforts.
  • This includes advising Physics students; facilitating partnerships with in-state universities for transfer programs and grants;
  • assisting students with other private or out-of-state universities' transfer programs requirements; participating in outreach activities to middle schools, high schools, and other STEM programs;
  • creating and maintaining partnerships with physicists in the industry; facilitating and creating possible internship opportunities for students;

and / or taking students on physics related field trips.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or higher in the teaching field OR

Master's degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credit hours

Desired Qualifications

A. Masters Degree or Ph.D. in Physics

B. Three (3) or more years of experience teaching physics at the college level

C. Experience working with, interacting with, and instructing, individuals of diverse abilities and / or cultural backgrounds

D. Experience teaching, assessing, and developing curricula using best practices and / or collaborative / active engagement techniques for physics education

E. Experience using and troubleshooting probeware and instructional technology in the classroom and / or laboratory

F. Experience with different teaching modalities - In person, Live Online, Hybrid

Special Working Conditions

  • Travel to campus during the interview / selection process will be at the candidate's own expense.
  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations.
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • May require prolonged periods of sitting and viewing a computer screen.
  • May be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs.
  • This position requires a physical presence on campus with possible partial remote work depending on business needs to best serve the students, department and college.
  • This position is scheduled to start August 2025.
