Job Summary :
The Nonprofit Tax Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex non-profit tax issues.
In this role, the Nonprofit Tax Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption and unrelated business income issues, and recognizing, communicating potential risks and potential changes in the tax policy and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal / state agencies.
In addition, the Nonprofit Tax Manager will be critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team and actively participate in the marketing and networking within an area of expertise and specialization while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions.
Job Duties : Tax Compliance :
Tax Compliance :
- Ensures both that (a) clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and (b) self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ( TQM )
- Conducts review of T / R’s and resolves all tax issues with client; involves specialists where appropriate
- Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and / or partner as appropriate
- Review of ASC 740-10 (Uncertain Tax Positions) workpapers and disclosure for audited financial statements
- Plans and reviews the tax process and the procedures to be performed to include : Budgeting and staffing Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs.
budget with assistance of Senior Timely billing including management of identified out-of-scope activity and communication to client Timely collection of A / R Manages client relationships / expectations in accordance with the project Provides advice to clients in a timely manner
Research :
- Identifies when research is needed; clearly and concisely frames issues to be researched; and clearly and concisely reports the analysis
- Applies most Firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns
- Involves firm specialists, as appropriate
Tax Consulting :
- Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient and effective methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing clients’ current and future taxes
- Applies the combination of tax knowledge and knowledge of business / industry to recommend solutions
- Develops and implements a work plan to include / organize the STS assistance on ongoing projects from client
- Frames projects and issues for effective delegation to seniors and associates
- Serves as a technical resource to peers within the region
- Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance
- Frames projects and issues for effective delegation to seniors and associates
- Ensures client service teams comply with Firm policy; regarding Written Tax Advice ( WTA )
Strategy Development :
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, ., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing nonprofit tax benefits
- Reviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action
- Researches and implements nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies and ideas
- Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects, and offers input on how to improve processes and methods
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities :
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments
- Trains Associates and Seniors how to use all current software tools
- Acts as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates
- Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Education :
- Bachelors degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred
- Masters in Accountancy or Taxation preferred
Experience :
- Five (5) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and / or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting / professional services experience required
- Prior supervisory experience required
License / Certifications :
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a . jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent ( EA ) (or the equivalent of one of these designations) required
- Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred
Software :
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred
- Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred

Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
New York City / Valhalla Range : $110,000 - $150,000
