Middlesex Generating is a landfill gas-fired cogeneration plant situated in Sayreville, NJ, boasting a 17-megawatt (MW) combined cycle facility.

Central to its operation are two Solar Tarus T60 Solar Gas Turbines, ensuring efficiency. To maximize performance, we've seamlessly integrated an Elliot Steam Turbine and a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) into the system.

This integration allows us to harness waste heat, thus optimizing our power generation process.

Opportunity Summary

The purpose of the Control Room Operator is to control, operate and maintain generation and auxiliary equipment in a manner that will ensure safety of personnel and equipment, promote high plant reliability, produce power economically and operate the generation facility in a manner to maintain the Landfill Gas Collection System goals and remain within environmental and regulatory compliance.

The Control Room Operator communicates with the MCUA, JP&L, and the Wellfield O&M Technicians to coordinate power generation, operations & maintenance activities in keeping with safe and efficient practices.

The Control Room Operator controls all plant activities during his / her shift.

Primary Functions

  • Operate the plant and all associated equipment under the direction of the Plant Manager, utilizing the DCS system to ensure operation within specified parameters.
  • Perform simple and combined cycle plant startups, shutdowns, and casualty control safely and efficiently.
  • Monitor plant operations and adjust as needed to optimize performance.
  • Monitor and maintain emissions control equipment, adjusting as necessary to meet State and Federal permits.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures during operation to assist maintenance technicians in identifying required repairs.
  • Perform proficiency watches outside the Control Room as required and effectively communicate plant status to the Plant Operator and Auxiliary Plant Operator.
  • Maintain a clean and safe Control Room environment.
  • Keep accurate records of plant operations, reviewing and analyzing records for pending failures.
  • Conduct plant startups and shutdowns, as well as weekly and monthly checklists.
  • Train and provide direction to Plant Operators in plant DCS operations.
  • Accurately maintain daily, weekly, and monthly reports.
  • Proactively seek responsibility to support the company's business needs.
  • Always exhibit professional behavior.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance tasks.
  • Participate in planned and forced outages and turnarounds.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.

Working Relationships

The Control Room Operator reports to the O&M Manager and gives direction to plant operators and assistant plant operators.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.

Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position entails a 12-hour rotating shift, consisting of days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions.

On call" status will be required.

Compensation

Initial starting compensation will range from $36.00 to $46.65 per hour.

Job Qualifications

Valid New Jersey Blue Seal boiler operator license or greater is required.

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.

High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Knowledge of power plant equipment, including motors, pumps, boilers, turbines, generators, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, cooling towers, and pollution control equipment (such as dust suppression, bag house, scrubber, selective catalytic reduction unit), as well as AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems.
  • Basic understanding of fundamental principles of physics, mathematics, AC and DC electrical theory, heat transfer and fluid flow, thermodynamics, chemistry, and metallurgy.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings, such as P&IDs, single-line diagrams, schematics, and logics.
  • Knowledge of power plant safety, particularly in areas such as chemical handling, high-energy systems, confined spaces, incipient fire suppression, first aid, rotating machinery, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Ability to operate valves, switches, controls, keyboards, and other devices associated with power plant equipment, as well as basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, rigging equipment, and other implements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Capability to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
