Description

The Police Officer is a sworn position within the College Police Department. Police Officers perform work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and Board policy.

Apprehends and arrests suspects, investigates unsafe and hazardous conditions, provides first-aid, responds to requests for assistance and reports of crime in progress, investigate incidents and prepare appropriate reports.

May work weekends, overtime, holidays, and variable shifts.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Police Department personnel assigned to this classification are authorized to carry firearms.

Upon appointment to the classification of Police Officer, the incumbent will be placed on a twelve-month period of probation as specified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Supervision received by the Chief of Police.

Provides work direction to lower-level staff. Supervision is exercised over cadets.

WORK SCHEDULE

40 hours / week, 12 months / year

6 : 00am-4 : 00pm

Position may require non-standard hours (nights and weekends). Must be willing to work a flexible schedule to include nights, weekends, holidays and special events.

Examples of Duties

Patrols District property to discourage and apprehend lawbreakers; detects fire, safety and health problems; to provide physical security for buildings and District property.

Responds to calls or requests for service regarding police related activity including but not limited to accidents, emergencies, crimes, threats, altercations, investigating unsafe conditions that may pose a hazard to the safety or heath of employees and students, and / or requests for aid / assistance;

makes observations and takes appropriate action.

Responds to requests to investigate unsafe conditions that may pose a hazard to the safety or health of students and employees.

Performs emergency first aid and stabilizes injured persons prior to the arrival of paramedics.

Arrests, searches and interrogates suspects in accordance with law enforcement codes and regulations.

Patrols parking lots; regulates traffic; issues parking and traffic citations and warnings; may conduct preliminary review of parking citation appeals.

Provides appropriate service, including information and assistance, to all members of the college community consistent with college policies and practices.

Gathers evidence and testifies in court as required.

Safely operate an automobile, SUV, or truck to respond to calls for service, observations, and emergency situations.

Safely operate police weapons including but not limited to firearms, Taser, and batons.

Investigates reports of criminal activity and violations of State and Federal statutes, codes and District regulations.

Assists the Glendale Police Department, District's Attorney's office and other law enforcement agencies with filing cases in the prosecution of a case.

Interviews, interrogates, and records statements from witnesses, suspects, and victims. Identifies relevant facts and prepares investigative reports on incidents and cases for follow up and / or filing with appropriate law enforcement officials.

Implements district emergency plan which includes but is not limited to : following the ICS system of response, responding to emergencies, and training faculty, staff, and students on emergency procedures.

Takes appropriate police action to assist the public as required by law.

Provides work direction to lower-level staff. May supervise cadets.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of :

Federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

Criminal law and police procedures.

Emergency disaster and first aid procedures.

Parking enforcement and traffic control.

Ability to :

Implement law enforcement procedures pertaining to arrest, search and seizure, and rules of evidence.

Learn and apply district and campus rules and regulations regarding, safety and conduct.

Use independent judgment and determine appropriate course of action in accordance with district and law enforcement policies and procedures.

Interpret and follow oral and written instructions.

Communicate, both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner

Interrogate suspects and interview complainants and witnesses.

Safely operate an automobile, SUV, or truck.

Safely operate police weapons including but not limited to firearms, Taser, and batons.

Respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations and determine appropriate course of action.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships in a diverse multi-cultural and multi-ethnic educational environment.

Remain calm and maintain order in emergency or threatening situations.

Interview, train, and provide work direction.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Minimum Qualifications :

High school diploma or equivalent.

Successful completion of a certified Regular Basic Police Academy certificate.

Licenses and Special Qualifications :

Possess a valid Class "C" California Driver's License.

Successfully pass pre-placement written, physical agility, psychological, medical exams, and extensive background investigation.

Must possess a valid California Class "C" Driver's License.

Must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment as a peace officer.

Additional Information

Starting salary is from $5, to $6, per month depending upon education and experience. Internal applicants may be initially placed at a higher starting salary as outlined in the CSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Fringe benefits, which are subject to change pursuant to negotiations under Section 3500 of the California Government Code, are presently provided and include family and domestic partner medical and dental, two-party vision plan, and employee life insurance.

or possess a valid California Basic Certificate; or have successfully completed a certified California recertification program.

Valid State of California Class C driver's license
