GEICO is seeking an experienced Staff Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications.

Our Staff Engineer is a key member of the engineering staff working across the organization to provide a friction-less experience to our customers and maintain the highest standards of protection and availability.

The ideal candidate has broad and deep technical knowledge, typically ranging from front-end UIs through back-end systems and all points in between.

As a Staff Engineer , you will :

  • Provide leadership to engineering teams utilizing data and related technologies
  • Own complete solution across entire life cycle while utilizing strong problem-solving ability
  • Influence and build vision with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve complex problems for building enterprise class business applications
  • Be accountable for the quality, usability, and performance of the solutions
  • Lead design sessions and code reviews to elevate the quality of engineering across the organization
  • Spearhead new feature use (innovate within existing tooling)
  • Spearhead new software acquisition and use (innovate with new tooling)
  • Leverage automation to remove redundant error prone tasks to improve the quality of the solution
  • Utilize programming languages / databases (.NET, SQL, NoSQL), Container Orchestration services (Docker and Kubernetes), and a variety of Azure tools and services across the Software Development Lifecycle
  • Execute software delivery utilizing continuous delivery, Infrastructure as code, PowerShell scripting, Operation Portals (e.

g., Azure Portal) and Monitoring Portals

  • Mentor junior team members in Data and related technology
  • Share best practices and improve processes within and across teams

Qualifications

  • Experience with bringing data into a centralized data repository or manipulating the available data to build additional data sets for Analytics and Reporting purposes
  • Experience with maintaining data quality throughout the lifecycle of the data
  • Experience with Data Modeling, source to target mapping
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks
  • Experience with CI / CD pipelines and task automation using scripting
  • Experience with end-to-end automation
  • Developing new and enhancing existing data processing (Data Ingest, Data Transformation, Data Store, Data Management, Data Quality) components
  • Strong working knowledge of SQL and the ability to write, debug and optimize SQL queries and ETL or ELT jobs to reduce the execution window or reduce resource utilization
  • Data Engineering experience focused on batch and streaming data pipelines development, Data processing / data transformation using ETL or ELT tools
  • Experience with Cloud Data Warehouse solutions experience. Examples include Snowflake, Azure DW, Redshift, or similar technology in other private or public clouds
  • Complete software development lifecycle experience including design, documentation, implementation, testing, and deployment
  • Must be able to concentrate and demonstrate a capacity for learning technical concepts and adapting to new technologies quickly
  • Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and have strong organization / priority setting skills
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Must be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information and follow processes that have been published
  • Must be knowledgeable of software coding and following standards and processes that have been published and the guidelines for the design
  • Must be able to communicate in a clear, concise, professional oral or written manner, to be understood by customers, clients, co-workers, and other employees of the organization
  • Must be able to perform under pressure and stressful situations
  • May be required to be on call for production support 24x7
  • Familiarity with Databricks, Fishtown / DBT tool and Graph Databases is preferred
  • Experience with Spark / PySpark is preferred
  • Experience in designing and building solutions for data security, data quality and observability, metadata management, data lineage, and data discovery
  • Experience with building data software in microservices-oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs
  • Experience in data software development, using data technologies such as Relational and NoSQL databases, open data formats
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, Scala, and / or other frameworks, building data pipelines (ETL and ELT) with batch or streaming ingestion, loading, and transforming data, and developing with big data technologies such as Spark, Hadoop, and MapReduce
  • Experience designing and building for data quality assurance, reliability, availability, and scalability, on existing and new data applications

Experience

  • 6+ years of professional experience in data software development, programming languages and developing with big data technologies
  • 4+ years of experience in open-source frameworks
  • 3+ years of experience with architecture and design
  • 3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent education or work experience.

Annual Salary

$100,000.00 - $261,500.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate / annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate.

Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
