Currently, Brown and Caldwell has a job opportunity in one of our nationwide offices for a self-motivated Principal for Air Permitting Services to join the team.
We are seeking a motivated, achievement-oriented individual who stays informed regarding the changing regulatory landscape for air permitting.
This person can help us fulfill our commitment to deliver client success on each and every project we undertake. You will work with nationally recognized, senior technical staff, providing technical mentorship and supervision to more junior staff.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical, written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. We are looking for someone that is highly organized and capable of working with a diverse team of scientists and engineers on multiple tasks with competing priorities.
The successful candidate will have a positive, can-do attitude; will be flexible and self-motivated, creative and well-organized, and quality-oriented with attention to detail.
Projects needing support include air quality compliance strategy, permitting and reporting for private sector industrial and commercial facilities, as well as municipal utilities.
Experience with greenhouse gas reporting is a plus. Engaging as part of an overall environmental compliance and permitting team is key, including collaboration with other subject matter experts to develop holistic environmental engineering solutions.
This position will support mid-level and junior level air practitioners, developing technical solutions for clients’ needs, leading technical approaches, problem solving, and providing senior review.
This position has the opportunity to provide technical leadership to a growing team to support air permitting and compliance services nationally for our clients as part of an overall Compliance and Permitting practice.
Specific duties may include, but are not limited to the following :
- Develop potential to emit calculations, perform air emissions modeling, and generate related air permit materials on behalf of the client, at both industrial and municipal sites.
- Serve as senior reviewer for air permitting projects including, potential to emit calculations, review modeling files, and permit application materials.
- Conducting regulatory research, interpreting, summarizing relevant requirements and communicating directly to the project team and / or client.
- Develop technical memorandums to communicate permitting strategies for client consideration.
- Evaluating applicability of air emissions regulations for specific emission sources.
- Preparation of greenhouse gas emissions inventories.
- Conducting site visits at commercial, industrial, and municipal facilities to support development of emissions inventories, permitting applicability evaluations, permit applications, and compliance audits.
- Interacting and communicating directly with clients on behalf of Brown and Caldwell and with regulators on behalf on the client.
- Working independently and with national teams to complete assignments with other team members in a virtual platform.
- Ability and willingness to travel to support regional and national client teams.
- Working with internal Client Service Teams in assisting in developing client relationships and preparing proposals.
Required Skills and Experience :
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in air quality compliance work with progressive responsibilities, including client engagement and business development.
- Clean Air Act permitting (including Title V) and compliance experience required.
- Knowledge of local, State and federal air emissions regulatory framework required.
- Previous experience communicating with clients and regulatory agency staff.
Desired Skills and Experience :
- BS Degree in Engineering (, Civil, Environmental, Chemical, Material Science) or Science (, Atmospheric, Environmental, Meteorological, Chemistry, Toxicology, Data Science) required.
- Ability to execute a project from start to finish from developing scope of work to project delivery required.
- Proficiency in Excel, Word and basic computer skills required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining a strong focus on health and safety.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate with and support other senior air practitioners.
- Ability to mentor and train junior staff on air quality projects.
- Ability to motivate others and lead project teams to deliver high quality work consistent with scope, schedule and budget commitments.
- Strong chemistry skills preferred.
- MS degree and / or Professional engineering experience a plus.
- Dispersion modeling experience preferred.
- Experience in California or Texas preferred.
- Oil and Gas experience preferred.
- Prevention of Significant Deterioration and Non-attainment New Source Review experience a plus.
Salary Range : The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.
These ranges may be modified in the future.

Salary : $115,000- $156,000
Location B :
Salary : $126,000- $172,000
Location C :
Salary : $138,000 - $188,000
