Position Description
Job Summary :
The HVAC Technician works with the Supervisor of Maintenance to maintain all heating and cooling systems.
Responsibilities / Duties / Functions / Tasks :
- Possesses knowledge of refrigeration and electrical theory, as well as principles and characteristics.
- Possesses knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the HVAC trade.
- Understands the legal implications of handling refrigerants and the associated hazards.
- Responsible for the uninterrupted operation of Roanoke County Public Schools mechanical systems.
- Must be knowledgeable of complex HVAC systems (includes geo-thermal, vav, cav, boiler / tower water source heat pump systems, boiler / chiller / tower systems).
- Must be proficient in a variety of building automation systems (Siemens, Trane Summit, Johnson Controls (Metasys N-2 and CCT), Allerton and Andover).
This includes multi-layered systems.
- Must also know pneumatically controlled systems and pneumatic integrated with DDC control systems.
- Must be well versed in industrial controls and electrical troubleshooting.
- Must be knowledgeable about variable frequency drives.
- Must be knowledgeable about cooling towers and closed-circuit coolers and their maintenance and operation.
- Must be knowledgeable about chillers and their operation.
- Must understand circulating pumps and insure their continual operation.
- In the absence of the Master HVAC Specialist, assigns work orders to other members of the HVAC team.
- Follows up on assignments and reports status to the maintenance supervisor.

- Possesses strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Education and Experience :
High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
Master’s Certificate preferred
Minimum Job Requirements / Qualifications :
- Has strong telephone and interpersonal communication skills. Strong work ethic, highly motivated with solid organizational skills;
- ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, the general public and associates;
ability to work under pressure. Very dependable; able to work independently at all times; ability to multi-task and / or continue a long / complicated task seamlessly through multiple interruptions.
