Role Overview :

As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be responsible for minor and major repairs and maintenance of heavy equipment vehicles (, snow-fighting equipment and dump trucks), light vehicles (roadside trucks), and tools.

Additionally, you will diagnose and resolve problems in compliance with current procedures and safety practices. You may also assist in major overhauls of gasoline or diesel engines, and repair difficult and complex automotive problems (, replacement or repair of pistons, rings, crankshafts, medium and heavy-duty automatic transmissions, single and twin countershaft manual transmissions).

Diesel Mechanic’s are responsible for providing their tools to complete the outlined job duties. Work week is Monday through Friday and is hrs per day.

Overtime will be available in winter as winter operations dictate

Salary :

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $ an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Mechanic Positions :

Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training and reimbursement provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

This position is located in INDOT’s Albany Area.

A Day in the Life :

The essential functions of this role are as follows :

  • Rebuild, replace, and / or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment (, exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes).
  • Performs minor repairs or other related mechanical work (, adjusts valves; changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors;

repairs or replaces hydraulic components.

  • Install snowplow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies.
  • Perform minor body repair work.
  • Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and / or pick up parts.
  • Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal.
  • Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.
  • Inspect vehicles / equipment for damage.
  • Snow removal when necessary and other related duties as required (, keeping garage area, equipment, and tools clean and orderly.
  • Mow the grass.
  • Operate snowplow, tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpens blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same.
  • Perform service calls on the roadside when equipment is disabled.
  • Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings, or related meetings.
  • Order and / or pick up parts when required by the supervisor.
  • Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on an emergency basis.
  • Coordinates work assigned by the Shop Foreman and reports problems as needed.

What You'll Need for Success :

The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have either

  • a High School Diploma or HSE diploma,
  • at least 1+ years of experience applying the below, outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.

Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.

  • Driver’s license is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of automobile functions, systems, and repairs.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to instruct others in the use of diagnostic equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of employee training and development.
  • Ability to understand the system of mechanical procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities / Direct Reports :

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
