Moffatt & Nichol is actively seeking a Senior Structural Engineer with 15+ years of experience with bridge, transportation, and / or rail structure projects to join our Norfolk, VA office.
As the successful new hire, you will possess strong design and communication skills and able to lead tasks and interact with clients.
Our Virginia bridge team provides a wide variety of structural transportation services to Virginia Department of Transportation, cities, and counties in the area including concrete bridge design, steel bridge design, bridge widening and replacement, grade separations, structural assessment, rehabilitation, load ratings, underground structures, and retaining walls.
Firm-wide, our bridge practice provides design and inspection services both domestically and internationally. We have worked on some of the most iconic bridges in the USA!

Duties and responsibilities :

- Lead project conceptualization, bridge design (preliminary and final), plan development, project implementation, and project controls
- Prepares / performs and checks structural analysis, design plans, specifications, and estimates for bridge projects while working collaboratively with multi discipline design teams
- Provide experience in project planning including general oversight, design, implementation, and ensures quality of work products
- Maintains knowledge of state DOT and local agency design standards and criteria, practices, and policies
- Performs structural analysis / design and leads / mentors team members through the design process
- Analyzes deteriorated components, assesses remaining capacities
- Develops / prepares construction documents (drawings, specification, and cost estimate)
- Performs structural inspection / field investigations (if needed) and prepares related reports
- Prepares and coordinates structural technical reports, cost estimates, marketing, and fee proposals
- Performs QA / QC review of documents prepared by others in accordance with Moffatt & Nichol’s Quality Management System (QMS)
- Mentor and review engineer’s design work
- Work collaboratively with Bridge and Rail Team and all company disciplines
- Function independently performing technical design tasks
- Assist in construction support services

Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. Master's degree in Structural Engineering strongly preferred
- Professional Engineer registration in the State of Virginia or eligible to obtain within 6 months; Structural Engineer licensure a plus
- 15+ years of experience in leading design tasks, bridge structural analysis, planning, design (new and rehabilitative), and preparation of construction drawings, contract documents, load rating and construction support services for highway and / or railroad bridge projects
- Steel, concrete and prestressed concrete bridge design experience
- Bridge, rail, and site inspection experience desirable
- Knowledge of VDOT, local municipal, and county design standards and criteria, practices, and policies strongly desired
- Proficiency in SAP2000, LARSA 4D, CSI Bridge, CTBridge, Xtract, LEAP software, AASHTOWare Bridge Rating (BrR), AutoCAD, and / or MicroStation preferred
- Additional design experience with other states and with load rating of bridges is desirable
- Strong written and verbal communication / coordination skills
- All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements :
Must be able to navigate field to inspect bridges and structures on occasion. Perform office work or attend client / site meetings.
Light regional travel as necessary.
