Position : Maintenance Worker III
Compensation
The estimated pay for this position is $24.0004 to $29.5175. The rates shown include a 6% premium pay (base $-$ plus 6%).
This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package for this position. Additional compensation may be available for this role through differentials, incentives, and bonuses.
In addition, this position may be eligible for participation and company contributions into the Kern County Employees’ Retirement Plan.
Definition :
Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of buildings, grounds and equipment, and oversees special program personnel as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics :
This is the journey level of the flexible series of Maintenance Worker. Incumbents work independently in the performance of a wide range of job duties, and may be required to oversee work release, community service and / or other special program personnel.
Promotion to the next higher level of Maintenance Worker IV is based upon acquiring the required training and experience, and recommendation of the department head.
Essential Functions :
- Checks buildings, equipment, and grounds to locate conditions indicating the need for repair and maintenance work.
- Makes building repairs involving plumbing, irrigation systems, painting, carpentry, mechanical, structural, flooring, and / or simple electrical work.
- Uses a variety of hand and power tools in the performance of work.
Other Functions :
- Operates a personal computer and / or mobile device, using a variety of software applications to complete work.
- Repairs furniture and equipment.
- Moves and installs partitions.
- Installs park structures and equipment.
- Builds structures.
- Mixes, pours, and finishes concrete and asphalt.
- Operates light motorized equipment, digs ditches and lays pipe.
- Designs and installs irrigation systems.
- Maintains and repairs impact rotor sprinklers, drip irrigation systems and control valves.
- Troubleshoots computerized and electromechanical controller problems.
- Performs brazing, soldering, and welding.
- Operates and maintains pumps and pressure tanks.
- Reads and interprets construction and working blueprints and diagrams.
- Performs painting.
- Assists with roofing.
- Paints airport landing strips.
- Performs cold patches and road repairs.
- Performs plumbing repairs.
- Installs and repairs fencing, gates and commercial garage doors.
- Repairs appliances, tools, and pieces of equipment.
- Oversees others in the performance of maintenance work.
- Performs refuse removal and processing.
- Installs dry wall.
- Performs back flow testing.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Employment Standards :
High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent and three (3) years of paid experience general building maintenance and repair, involving minor carpentry, electrical, painting, and plumbing work OR completion of two (2) years’ experience equivalent to a Maintenance Worker II in the Kern County Classification System.
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.
Additional Requirements :
Some positions may require :
Possession and maintenance of a Back Flow Tester Certification.
Knowledge of :
The practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical trades; plumbing and electrical equipment used in buildings and grounds;
road, fence and commercial garage door repairs.
Ability to :
- Determine the need for repairs; use hand tools utilized in the building trades; estimate time and materials needed to perform a job;
- follow oral and written directions; use good body mechanics and follow basic safety practices in the performance of job duties;
operate a personal computer, mobile device and associated software.
