The Senior Accountant at Virginia Union University is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and supporting the financial goals of the university.
This role involves overseeing general ledger activities, preparing financial statements, performing account reconciliations, and assisting with audits.
The Senior Accountant will collaborate with various departments to provide financial insights and assist in managing budgets and reports.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information and maintain compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and university policies.
- Perform variance analysis and provide reports on budget discrepancies to department heads and leadership.
- Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and accruals.
- Assist in the development of annual budgets and forecasts, providing analytical support to departments as needed.
- Coordinate with external auditors during annual audits and ensure the university meets all regulatory and compliance requirements.
- Recommend and implement improvements to accounting processes and controls to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and security.
- Collaborate with other departments to support financial needs, grant management, and special projects.
- Provide guidance and support to junior accounting staff and assist with training as necessary.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CMA designation preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, preferably in a higher education or non-profit environment.
- Must be able to lift 10 pounds.
