MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT-1ST SHIFT

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for the overall performance of the maintenance team (exempt and non-exempt) at one of the manufacturing facilities within the NOW organization.
  • Manages the maintenance and service of all processing, packaging and distribution equipment used to manufacture NOW products.
  • Schedules repair, maintenance, and installation to avoid disruption to business operations. Maintains files and records of preventive and routine maintenance schedules, work completed, equipment manuals, warranties, etc.

Ensures proper troubleshooting of systems / equipment to minimize down-time and eliminate re-occurring of problems.

  • Assists with maintenance projects including expense, improvement modifications, and capital projects. Reports on potential problems and progress on current projects in a timely manner.
  • Drives and sustains the maintenance department performance metrics.
  • Plans, developments, and implements procedures designed to minimize operating costs including downtime, labor utilization, overtime, material expenses, and outside contractors.
  • Collaborates directly with the NOW engineering team on capital project execution in the Sparks facility. Ensures the proper installation and project deliverables are met with the goal of a vertical start up.

Including mechanic training, spare parts inventory, and documentation.

  • Establishes best-in-class maintenance processes, including predictive and preventive maintenance strategies.
  • Utilizes the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track department metrics and make educated, data driven decisions.
  • Leads and directs the workforce in problem identification, problem solving and implementing continuous improvement measures.

Employs a root cause mentality at all times.

Ensures compliance with all codes, ordinances, OSHA regulations, and safety rules for work performed by maintenance staff or subcontractors.

Ensures that all equipment has the necessary safety devices such as guards, safety switches, covers, etc.

Collaborates with the leadership team to manage department budget, including cost of spare parts and outside services.

Identifies and drives cost savings initiatives.

  • Ensures key performance indicators in the maintenance area are met or exceeded. Measures efficiency and quality on a daily basis, with goal of meeting standards.
  • Supports positive employee relations, fair treatment and respect in all aspects of interaction with employees; address employee concerns / requests in a timely and caring manner;

ensures all employees and ideas are respected and valued and their unique and diverse perspectives are leveraged to improve business results.

  • Actively engages in the performance of his / her team through setting objectives and measuring performance. Serves as a coach and mentor to ensure the ongoing development of his / her team.
  • Complies with safety and cGMP requirements.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY STATEMENT

Supports a culture of safe production and lab testing and exhibits safe work practices. Actively participates in the safety program by engaging in safety activities.

Effectively provides and accepts constructive peer-to-peer feedback on safety performance. Adheres to policies, procedures, SOP’s, safe work practices, and safety policies and procedures (SPP).

Reports ALL workplace incidents immediately. Communicates concerns to leadership, reports hazards, and provides input on prevention.

Properly uses, wears, and stores Personal Protective Equipment when required. Participates on safety teams and / or completes safety-related activities as part of regular job responsibilities.

Responsible for safe work performance in area. Ensures the completion of job safety analyses, safety inspections and employee training.

Acts as primary communicator of safe work practices and information to department. Facilitates employees’ participation in the safety activity card program and on safety teams.

Completes incident investigation reports and submits them to manager by end of shift on which the incident is reported. Conducts safety contacts and documents corrective and preventative actions.

Enforces company policies, procedures, SOP’s, SPP’s and safe work practices. Ensure implementation and enforcement of workplace health and safety requirements.

Ensures activities are complete to communicate, promote, and enforce safe work practices by supervisors and employees to ensure injury prevention efforts are effectively implemented.

Ensures safe production methods are considered in the procurement of materials and equipment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises the Leads and Maintenance Mechanics on all shifts. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance;

rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree ( or and at least five years’ maintenance experience within a GMP environment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Course work or equivalent experience with basic concepts of engineering and physical science required.
  • Minimum of three years prior supervisory experience required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong mechanical / electrical skills. Examples include : basic machine shop practices, welding, troubleshooting, pneumatics, hydraulics.
  • Proven experience in project management execution.
  • Experience in predictive / preventive maintenance programs and with Lean initiatives.
  • Knowledge of safety related issues including compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Technically oriented, comfortable around machinery and plant environment.
  • Ability to read and understand blue prints and other schematics.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills.

This position works in all areas of NOW’s manufacturing facilities with direct exposure to ingredients (powders and liquids), mixes (powders and liquids), equipment, and packaging.

Frequently exposed to all of the FDA designated major food allergens (Milk, Eggs, Fish, Crustacean shellfish ( crab, lobster, shrimp), Tree nuts (, almonds, walnuts, pecans), Wheat and Soybeans, except for peanuts.

The employee may work in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes, cold, and heat.

The employee is required to travel to other facilities.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud, and in some areas where louder hearing protection is required.
