THE POSITION
The Department of Conservation & Natural Resources is on the lookout for a qualified individual to take on the role of Civil Engineer Trainee (Hydraulic).
This position involves a diverse range of civil engineering responsibilities, including the design, construction, rehabilitation, maintenance, and inspection of dams, as well as other related civil engineering projects for both the Bureau of Forestry and the Bureau of State Parks.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The employee plays a crucial role in supporting senior civil engineers and the section chief with the in-house design of a diverse range of civil engineering projects.
These projects encompass various tasks, including but not limited to the rehabilitation and removal of dams, the construction of marinas and docks, the development of boat ramps, the implementation of erosion control structures, streambank stabilization, roadway stabilization, retaining walls, concrete slabs, culverts, and bridges.
The employee aids in hydrology and hydraulic calculations, conducts structural design calculations, and contributes to the preparation of engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
In addition, the employee is responsible for creating plans and specifications using AutoCAD, drawing on data obtained from site investigations and topographic surveys for projects related to dam rehabilitation, dam removals, marina dock construction, and streambank stabilization, among others.
The employee also assists senior civil engineers and section chiefs in conducting dam inspections within Forest Districts and State Parks, helping to identify necessary structural and safety repairs during these evaluations.
Furthermore, the employee collaborates with external consultants engaged in dam rehabilitation and other civil engineering projects for the Department, assisting in the review of proposals and submissions throughout the design process.
This includes verifying the engineering designs for accuracy, correctness, and constructability. Once the final plans and specifications are approved, the employee forwards them to the Contract Management Section for the bidding process.
To enhance job performance and remain updated on the latest policies, permit requirements, engineering design practices, and technological advancements, the employee actively participates in conferences, seminars, and training courses.

Work Schedule and Additional Information :
- Full-time employment.
- Work hours are 8 : 00 am to 4 : 30 pm, Monday - Friday, with a 1-hour lunch.
- Overnight travel required
- Telework : You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 5 days per pay period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection.
If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements :
- Four years of civil engineering experience, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
- A bachelor s degree in civil engineering, or in a closely related field, which includes or was supplemented by major course work in civil engineering; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes possession of an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Conditions of Employment :
This position also requires possession of a valid driver s license which is not under suspension.
Other Requirements :
- PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
