Overview :

The Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument (GCPNM) is seeking to recruit two Indigenous youth, age 18-30 , to work as paid recreation interns assisting with a full range of recreation management activities within the GCPNM and other BLM jurisdictional boundaries.

These positions are grant-funded by the GCPNM Youth Opportunity Project CESU to mentor and help indigenous youth gain an appreciation for public lands, learn about conservation-related careers, and become the next generation of public lands stewards.

Responsibilities :

Interns will be assigned mentors and be coached by park staff. Workshops on goal setting, careers, and preparing federal resumes will also be offered.

These positions will be responsible for the following duties which may include some or a combination of :

• Covering all aspects of the Recreation from wilderness boundaries to collecting visitor use data through trail / TRAFx counters and trailhead register sign-in boxes.
• Opportunities to assist in the processing of Special Recreation Permits (SRP), and other office work related to an Outdoor Recreation Planner.
• Other duties include backcountry vehicle / UTV patrols, trail maintenance, site cleanup, public outreach opportunities, and assisting our Interpretation staff at our Public Lands Visitor Center, where interns will provide information and education about recreational opportunities.
• Additionally in the field, interns will provide the public with information on good resource management practices for the area, such as putting out your campfire, do not litter, no driving off roads, Leave No Trace, etc.

Assists by picking up trash, cleaning restrooms, and minor repairs of recreation facilities.

Assists in maintaining and installing signs, gates, fences, and other facilities as assigned using power and hand tools.

Monitors vehicle and fleet maintenance. Works with volunteers and other groups to complete tasks.

Additional duties may be assigned as needed, including work to other specific resource areas such as range, archaeology, and law enforcement.

Qualifications :

• Applicants who are interested in or seeking a degree in outdoor recreation, hospitality, or tourism will be given the greatest consideration.
• Any youth indigenous to the Americas is welcome to apply, but greater consideration will be given to applicants who have membership in one of these tribes.
• Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, Shivwits Band, Cedar Band, Kanosh Band, Indian Peaks Band, Koosharem Band, San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe, Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians, Moapa Band of Paiute Indians, Las Vegas Tribe of Paiute Indians, Confederated Tribes of Goshutes, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Hopi Tribe, Zuni Pueblo, Northwestern Band of Shoshoni Nation, Skull Valley Band of Goshute, Southern Ute Indian Tribe, Ute Indian Tribe.
• Work Environment : Recreation Interns will be working outside and exposed to a variety of weather conditions (temperatures 45 - 105+ degrees).
• Must provide own living quarters.
