Position Focus :
Under the direction of the PI, the Research Associate will function as the Laboratory Manager and manage day-to-day lab operations.
The candidate will also contribute to research projects, as directed by the PI, by conducting experiments in the field of genetics.
This position is within a new and growing laboratory that studies how genetic variation in our mitochondria underlies health and disease, using a combination of genetics, molecular biology and cell culture techniques.
- Job duties include : Designing and performing experiments under the PI's direction; Documenting, analyzing and reporting results and troubleshooting experiments;
- Managing and updating protocols, SOPs, and other laboratory documentation; Communicating with the PI, other lab members, other laboratories, facilities, EHS, and other Yale offices;
- Training new lab members; Collaborating with other lab members; Monitoring and implementing lab safety requirements; Managing common space and lab equipment;
- Ordering, stocking, and organizing resources and supplies; Shipping and receiving biological material; Coordinating lab events and fostering a positive, supportive environment;
Potentially other duties to support lab operations as requested.
Essential Duties
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority.
2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning. 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills, including ability in training and working within a multi-disciplinary team.
Required Skill / Ability 2 :
Self-motivated, dependable, attentive to details, and ability to take initiative and work independently.
Required Skill / Ability 3 :
Proven experience with genetics and molecular biology techniques and / or cell culture, including ability to analyze, interpret, and troubleshoot experimental data.
Required Skill / Ability 4 :
Ability to identify and implement processes to maximize efficiency and operational excellence, including good problem-solving skills.
Required Skill / Ability 5 :
Ability to write and organize scientific / laboratory documentation.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills :
Master’s or higher degree in genetics, biology or related fields and proficiency in bench work, including experience in a research laboratory.
