The Lansing Board of Water & Light has an opening for a Supervisor, Customer Projects & Utility Services in Lansing, MI.

Starting Salary Range : $ 91,746. - $ 111,930.

Position Summary :

The Customer Projects & Utility Services Supervisor is responsible for leading a diverse team that performs technical electrical service duties directly related to service the customers.

These duties include performing customer communication, electric distribution primary and service design, project management, financial analysis associated with electric distribution design and service installation / modification required to optimally meet BWL customer requirements.

Work will be performed under the general direction of the Manager of T&D Engineering and Technical Services and focused on meeting the BWL's strategic plan.

Essential Functions :

  • Oversight of electrical design and approval for overhead, underground, street lighting and outdoor lighting, and joint use projects.
  • Coordination of workload, assignments, project lists and documentation.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code and relevant sections of the National Electric Code.
  • Supervises and supports employees ensuring quality customer communication and service processing.
  • Supervises work of outside technical contractors for required engineering services.
  • Ensures standardization and quality control of sketches, allocations, work orders, authorizations, estimates, service orders, service spots, release packages and customer service agreements.
  • Develops procedures and guidelines for processes involved in design work for release to construction.
  • Mentors staff on correct BWL construction standards, engineering, and construction practices for sketch related work.
  • Functions also include design of electrical projects, service quality, and all related issues associated with customer delivery services at the BWL through leading coordination with various BWL stakeholders including T&D Planning and Records Management.
  • Utilizes approved methods for tracking and managing work.
  • Negotiate distribution routes, cost, permits, easements and arrangements with customers, attorneys, and outside agencies such as city, county, state, government, and inspection agencies.
  • Set billing rate for project, assist in billing / service account set up and review account for proper billing after construction.
  • Be well versed and enforce the BWL rates and Rules and Regulations for electric service.
  • Follow-up and tracking of revenue projects versus actual revenue and estimated construction cost versus actual for projects.
  • Develop and enhance technical skills to keep abreast of current technologies and engineering practices.
  • Work to continuously improve the design process through coordination and collaboration with other departments.
  • Participation in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System and Work Management processes.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Support of electrical outage(s) and other emergent events. (i.e. restoration activities due to weather events or other unforeseen circumstances).

Job Specifications : Required

Required

Associate's degree in electrical engineering, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Preferred.

  • Five years of utility electrical distribution design / planning experience.
  • Two years of leadership experience or completion in the BWL emerging leader's program or related leadership and supervisory training.
  • Ability for critical thinking and problem solving on complex tasks, coaching subordinates to provide recommendations and solutions for resolving complex issues.
  • Demonstrating interdepartmental teamwork and leading teams and collaboration on assignments as well as independent work.
  • Demonstrating oral and written communication skills, including peer, supervisor, and management dialog.
  • Demonstrate ability to multi-task and time management for individual and interdepartmental team assignments.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and methods used in the design and construction of electrical primary and secondary distribution systems.
  • Must be credible to the BWL's customers, with demonstrated ability to act as a customer advocate, as well as confident in dealing with external agencies.
  • Knowledge of overhead and underground electric T&D systems, including Streetlighting and Joint Use projects.
  • Basic knowledge of GIS platforms.
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code and National Electric Safety Code
  • Strong written and verbal communication skill required.
  • Ability to analyze data.
  • Manage multiple projects.
  • Construct reports and documentation.
  • Proficiency with PC and common business software, e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe.
  • Must have valid Michigan driver's license with acceptable driving record

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment including the use of stairs.

Constantly operates a computer, and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen.

Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and / or position the body to reach items on the floor / below knee level or reach overhead.

The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and uneven terrain. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and / or operate field instruments / equipment.

Works in temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.

Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
