The Department

Designed specifically for the pursuit of art practices and the study of art history, the Department of Art & Art History is housed in a spacious and well-equipped facility at the northwestern edge of the SSU campus.

The department offers courses of study leading to a . degree in Art History and . and . degrees in Studio Art, as well as a minor in Museum and Gallery Methods.

The Studio Art curriculum is designed to develop the ability to create, analyze, interpret and evaluate art. The department strives to stimulate creativity and competency as students develop their skills and knowledge of materials and technologies.

Fundamental to the study of art is a belief in its potential to communicate ideas, emotions, and values necessary for understanding and functioning effectively within the modern world.

The Studio program prepares majors for careers in art and work at the graduate level. The program facility houses specialized studios for the study of Ceramics, Digital Media, Painting, Printmaking, Photography and Sculpture, and includes a wood shop, welding studio, and bronze foundry.

Sonoma State University is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Duties of the Position

Applicants for the Art Studio courses will be expected to teach one or more of the following Studio Art courses. Familiarity with safe instructional use of all tools, equipment and techniques used in the areas the candidate is applying for is required.

3D Fundamentals

Professional Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have the following requirements for Art Studio courses :

  • MFA or an equivalent degree within the area they are applying (example : MFA in Sculpture).
  • Two years, teaching courses similar to those described at the college level (not including . experience).
  • Strong record of exhibition on the regional and national levels.
  • Professional and technical experience in studio art, and experience in preparing students in art theory, critical discourse practice and contemporary art

Rank and Salary

Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.

  • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range : $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
  • The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
  • Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
  • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
  • Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.
